Request clarification before answering.
Hi,
Check your number assignment for the group as follows.
1. Go to MMNR transaction.
2. Click on Groups.
3. Select your group and click on maintain.
4. Check the number range assigned for external.
If its assigned, system wont throw any error messages regarding number range for the material type.
Also, in material type, please tick mark "External Number Assignment Without Validation " In the case of external number asignment, this indicator tells the system not to check the material number entered manually, against the number range maintained. In this case, the material number assigned must contain at least one letter, and not consist only of figures.
Hope its helpful.

AKPT

Hi Amala,
I managed to upload with external number by doing these steps:
After I changed this part, now I can create material for external number, but I cannot create material for group which I assigned as internal number. Do you mind to post the screenshot of point 3. Maybe I configured wrongly at this part.
Thank you in advance

Kenzo

Hi Kenjo,
Please assign your number range group (Group1 ) to the material type (Axs material type). Based on your screen shots it seems you have not assigned Axs material type to Group 1, please follow step as,
double clicking on material type(Axs material type) and select check box of your "Number Range Group (group1) for external AND Click element group. save it. now create a material using number range it should work this time.

Hi,
You should create "Number range group text" for external by selecting ext check box and assign
Number Range Group text to your material type by double clicking--> material type--> select check box of your "Number Range Group text" for external --> Click Element/Group in the Application Bar and Save in t.code:MMNR
If you want alphanumeric number of materials, you can use use exit MGA00002-Material Master (Industry): Number Assignment.
For more refer a thread which already discussed external number range setting:

Hi Kenzo,
Pls try by activating 'External No range assignment' (revert your step no 3) by accessing TC - OMS2.
Note: IF you un mark the checkbox then system will accept the material number only from the range defined in customization and in case you keep this marked then you may enter any number for material.
More details regarding material number range can be retrieved from

Hi Friend,
I think this will help you in solving the Issue
The Number interval (i.e, from and to number) it should start with a number and end with a number / It should start with Alpha numeric and end with Alpha numeric / It should start with alphabetic and should end with alhabetic. For Ex: from 0000001 to 000040000 or from AAAZZZz to BBBZZZ or 1AAAZZ to 2ASDD
But it should not be like from 1111 to aaaazzz or vice versa
Please try this and i hope it will help you
Please correct me If I go wrong and do reply for this post.
Thanks
Routhu

Hi Routhu,
Thanks for your reply. I don't think that's the problem, because that number
settings are now being used for SAP 4.7. As we are going to upgrade to ECC6,
that's why I try to keep the same number setting as the current SAP prod. I
have ever tried to test like your example and it didn't work as well. It only
works when I change the setting in T-Code SNRO like I posted above. But now I
my only concern is there any impact by setting in that manner.
Thanks,
Kenzo
Dear Ken,
1.) I don' t think you will have issues to continue the number ranges for all purchasing documents. Even for year wise dependent number ranges of goods movement/finance documents.
2.) Have to collect all the current number from the required number ranges and at the time of go live, have to give the same as "from number and to number let be the legacy number or whatever you wish to have.
R,
Amala
I have the same screen as Amala, Ken can you tell in which system/release you are? any special industry solution?

Dear Ken,
Hope your number series is not truly external
you have to give like
From To
AAAAAAA ZZZZZZZZ(depending on the number of digits you want to give)

Dear Kenzo,
Please check in SPRO if the group assignment is still there for the material type or got removed. Check using t-code MMNR.

You Can try also by creating SNRO object and creating a different interval.
T-Code = SNRO
and consuming the SNRO object by using FM "NUMBER_GET_NEXT"

Hi,
You can execute T Code OMS2, select your material type and click (go to) details. Please try by activating External no. assignment w/o check. Click Tick mark in the box and save.

Hi Jerrysam,
Please create material type in T code OMS2 if you have not created yet (just copy from standard and rename). This is required first. After that try to create material number range in T code mmnr. In your case, I think you go to configuration help or Interval tab. You'll find change group option (pen icon).
Click that change group icon and you will go to
Click on create & fill your group name and number range details and click save.
Once saved, click back & you'll find below page.
Under column 01, you'll find your material type, select it and then click the icon on top (yellow marked in the screenshot) assign element to group.
You'll get below screen. Select your number range and click green tick mark.
Now scroll down the page. You'll find your number range assignment is done successfully.
Hope this helps.
