Material Master Description greater than 40 characters

We have materials whose description is above 40 characters. In SAP, we can maintain short description upto 40 characters only.

We are maintaining description in Sales Text in material master, but during sales order creation user need to identify this material by looking at description only.

If they shorten the description and adjusted it in 40 characters then they will struggle in finding the right material.

How to maintain Short Text description over 40 characters ?

The Material Description is set to max 40 characters in the standard .

The Alternative is to create your own custom field using Extensibility and maintaining the description there

It looks like it is still not possible to use this custom field in apps like Sales Orders. If the use want to identify the product using the product field, you can only search on the standard description. Or is there an alternative?
