Hello,I know that production manufacturing methods include discrete manufacturing and process manufacturing and so on.
Then what's the difference between discrete manufacturing and process manufacturing ? More precisely, why would companies that seem better suited to process manufacturing adopt a discrete manufacturing?
My question is why would jam, laundry detergent, and bread-making companies choose Production Order instead of Process Manufacturing. Does bread and jam break down into flour again? From what I've seen on the internet, No. It can't be done.
But why are they making bread with the Production Order? Let me know if you know why they made that choice.even though Process Manufacturing is a more suitable product(jam or bread), I wonder what difference it makes to choose Discrete Manufacturing.
Thank you for taking the time to think about it.

In SAP the different between Discrete Manufacturing and Process Manufacturing primarily relates to the nature of the production process and how the materials are managed and transformed into finished goods. Key characteristics for discrete manufacturing approach using production order are production is based on individual unit and each unit can unique identified. Components can be assembled, dissembled and products can be easily counted. examples for this industry are automotive, electronics, furniture, etc. SAP PP-PI using process orders apply for production is formula-based or recipe-driven. Output often continuous or batch oriented. raw material not easily separated. Recipe management and batch management are commonly used.
Hybrid - Some process industries implement discrete manufacturing models in SAP due to specific requirements better supported by discrete model. The reasons for choosing Discrete Manufacturing in Process Industries could be packaging operations. In food / pharma. industries the bulk production might follow process model, but the packaging operations could be managed as discrete manufacturing. While for chemical manufacturer producing paints might need discrete manufacturing for final packaging and labeling.
There are few Key criteria to consider choosing the right approach. For example, product characteristics, production volume, traceability, flexibility needs, operation requirement, and etc.
Conclusion, the best approach depends on the business processes and specific operational requirement to ensure optimal production control, traceability and efficiency.
Hope above clarifies your queries.
