Dear All,
We are using plant maintenance from last 5 yrs. Now, we want to implement serial number functionality for our equipment to have inventory management for piece of equipment and to track equipment during refurbishment process.
I need a guidance on below points -
1. How we can start with this implementation as we are already having 1000+ equipment created without serial numbers and without material assignment.
2. How we can have this process for new equipment which will be created in future.
Let me know your valuable inputs on this.

For existing equipments
As said above go to IE02
to get this screen
to get this extra tab (for serial no of material)
Give a material number and serial number.
Suppose you give 1 in the serial number and save, the Last serialNo. value will appear 1 for NEXT equipment of the same material, GUIDING you to choose proper number.
So like wise you can complete material wise equipment numbering for existing equipments.
For new equipments.
Use Tcode IQ01 (Give the Material code and Equipment Category in the initial screen and Enter)
Click on Equipment view to activate equipment creation.
(A temporary equipment number will be displayed, forget about this)
The serial number will be given by the system as per the Last SerialNo shown in the screen.
Save.
A new equipment is created for this material and serial number you've given.
(Equipment number will be displayed in the taskbar as always)

Thank you for reply. I am able to understand now how to go ahead in Serial number.
I want to know about how we can synchronize to create equipment master automatically. Like is there a standard configuration or we need to do a development ?
Also, we how can ensure that only assets records/purchase related to maintenance will create equipment records and not any other assets (e.g. asset records for land/building etc)?

If you can go through the replies given above, you can understand how to create Equipment automatically while doing MIGO.
Check the content under New Equipment Creation in one of my previous replies.
There are 2 possibilities in which Equipment will be created. One is with Material & another one is with Asset.
In Asset categories itself, if you want to restrict that some of the assets should not be created as equipment, its purely user awareness.
Whenever you create some of the Assets with specific Asset categories, Equipment creation can be made as automatic. Check the option of Synchronization between Assets & Equipment in Configuration path.
By controlling creation of Equipment manually by not giving authorization for IE01 or giving IE01 to only authorized people & by making automatic creation of Equipment either through MIGO or Asset creation, you can achieve that unwanted equipments getting created.

Dear All,
Thank you for valuable inputs. This will be really helpful for me during serial number implementation.
I want to know some details about materials which we is -
1. To assign a serial number to equipment , we need have an material number. This material will be created as a spare part item in MM01 or it will have some other material type ? Also, let me know which are views we need to maintained in material master for such materials.
2. Do we need to create material for each equipment master record or we can create one material and assigned to different equipment s of same type (e.g. 10 Motors with individual equipment records) with different serial numbers.
3. Since, during purchasing of new equipment, we create an asset number and PO will be created w.r.t. that asset. After, that in PM we are creating equipment record for that asset. But, we don't maintain any asset number in equipment master record in SAP. In such cases, do we need to create a material number also separately with serial number.

1. Yes you need a material number to serialize equipments.
About views to be maintained it falls in the jurisdiction of MM module and depends on the overall functions.
2. 10 identical motors need only one material number to serialize from 1 to 10.
3. Yes, you need material numer once you want to serialize the equipments.

If you consider Equipment as Asset, then its not required to create Material Master.
You have the option of creating Equipment automatically while creating Asset or vice versa.
The Materials for which you want to maintain stock as well as want to track individual maintenance history, then you can create Material with Serial number. That will create Equipment for the combination of Material & Serial Number.
In Plant 2 view of Material Master, serial number profile will be assigned.
We use ERSA material type fro this type of Equipments which have material codes. For your case start with basic essential views. Because the present need is to create Material code for the purpose of serialization, you may ask the consultant to create codes with basic essential views required.
(We do not have asset synchronization here.)

for already created Equipments you can assign serial number and material manually in IE02 under serial data tab
2. How we can have this process for new equipment which will be created in future.
while creating a new equipments, you have an option under serial number profile in transaction code OIS2 whether Equipment Requirement field, choose 02 for this value and when you are trying to create serial number while creating transaction document system automatically creates corresponding equipment master in the background
