According to help.sap the subitem category in Group Reporting is fixed to 1 (transaction types) or 2 (functional area), see Define Subitems | SAP Help Portal
However in the system it is possible to create more subitem categories and when setting default values or in breakdown categories I can select other subitem categories than 1 and 2.
In my specific case we have subitems for certain balance sheet fs items that are not aggregated on carry forward.
Is there a reason only subitem categories 1 and 2 should be used? Or can I create more categories without issues in the system afterwards?

Hi,
from a technically point of view it is no problem to add new subitem categories in order to differentiate parts of the balance sheet items. and in former consolidation solution like EC-CS or SEM-BCS it was a kind of best practice in doing so.
But in FIN-CS you've some restrictions especcialy in relation to the transfer of universal journal data and especially the use of correction positings via postins level 0C (for instance you have to set up all subitems to all subitem categories and additionally limit them via max.selections in order to have the entire functionalities for 0C-postings). Furthermore you have to note some dependencies in relation to the behaviour of BCF and CT.
So, from my point of view it is still very beneficial to use different subitems (using the same source: transaction type) to structure and manage postings within the balance sheet. But there are some obstacles so far.
