Extension ledger with type "S" on the top "P" extension ledger.

Dear all,

I want to create extension ledger with type "S" on the top "P" extension ledger.
However, when I try to create an extension ledger with "S" type using the "Define Extension Ledger" configuration,
I cannot find an extension ledger with the "P" type in the Underlying ledger of an extension ledger and cannot specify it.
(Refer to attached file.)
As shown below, the SAP documentation on multiple extension ledgers says it's possible, but I'd like to know if it's not possible in the public cloud or if I'm misunderstanding something.

On top of an extension ledger with the standard journal entries type, you can create an extension ledger of any type.
On top of a type P extension ledger, you can create another type P or type S extension ledger.
On top of a type S extension ledger, you can only create another type S extension ledger.

Thank you,

Su young.

Hello dear user,

And thank you for asking your question in the SAP Community blog.

In SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, your observation is correct: you cannot create an extension ledger of type "S" on top of an extension ledger of type "P" even though the SAP documentation mentions this as theoretically possible in general.

Key Clarification

The SAP documentation you're referring to most likely reflects SAP S/4HANA On-Premise or Private Cloud Edition behavior. In S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition (2SL), the extensibility and ledger configuration capabilities are more restricted by design to ensure system standardization and reduce complexity in upgrades and maintenance.

Your Issue in Detail:

You said:

"I cannot find an extension ledger with the 'P' type in the Underlying ledger of an extension ledger..."

This is expected in Public Cloud, where:

  • The "Underlying Ledger" field only shows the standard ledger (type 0) or base extension ledger (type P) if SAP allows it.
  • SAP does not currently allow creating a chain of extension ledgers (i.e. P → S) in the Public Cloud Edition even if technically possible in the Private Cloud or On-Premise environments.

Official Restriction

SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition:

  • Allows creating one level of extension ledgers on top of the standard ledger.
  • Does not support chaining extension ledgers (P → S, P → P, S → S) in practice, even though documentation may suggest theoretical capability.

I hope this will help you answer your question.

Best regards,

Jeremy

I need posting data corresponding to statistical price conditions among SD's price conditions and additional posting data for management accounting purposes. I want to report this data using a single extension ledger, but according to your solution, it's impossible. Because Ledger 0C(Management Accounting) is blocked for manual postings. I would like to know if I can allow manual posting for Ledger 0C (Management Accounting).
