Expiry Date Adjustment Upon HU Unpacking in EWM

We have a business requirement regarding the handling of HU-managed and batch-managed articles in SAP EWM.

Business Scenario:

  • We manage an article in SAP EWM with HU and batch management.
  • The HU is stored in unrestricted stock with an expiry date of one year.
  • During our warehouse operations, we perform picking or repacking by splitting the HU into one or multiple new HUs.
  • When we execute the first picking operation, we must unpack the HU to take a partial quantity.
  • Once the HU is unpacked, its expiry date must be automatically reduced to one week (as an example).

Example Use Case:

  • Consider a milk bottle:
    • Before opening, its expiry date is 6 months.
    • Once opened, its remaining shelf life is only 3 days.
  • We need SAP EWM to automatically adjust the expiry date of the unpacked HU according to predefined rules.

Question:

Is there any SAP standard functionality that allows the system to automatically adjust the expiry date of an HU once it is unpacked?
If not, do you recommend any enhancements or workarounds to handle this requirement?

Hello MahdiNaji,

I had the same requirement couple of years ago in a pharma company.
We search in EWM standard and couldn't find anything. Business also didn't want to create a new batch for the container which was just open.

So we create a Ztable with the HU and a "reduced shelf life" date.

After you have to use adjust some processes:

  1. Calculate the reduced shelf life during the opening process (for us it was sampling, partial picking) & update Z table
  2. Search - Automatically search and sort for the HU with reduced shelf life / normal shelf life (at batch level)
  3. Report to display the Reduced shelf life and block it when expired.

BR,

Emmanuel.
