Discontinued Material in BOMs

Hello All,

I have read a lot of information on discontinued material and I think that I understand it for the most part but I am not sure about using discontinuation in BOMs.

My scenario is this:

I have a BOM that has a material 1234. This material is to be replaced by material 5678. For material 1234 I will set the discontinuation indicator of 1 with the eff-out date and the new material 5678 on MRP 4.  I believe that I should next go into the BOM and add the new material and then set the discontinuation and follow-up groups for the materials but what I do not understand is when or if I would delete the old material 1234 from the BOM? If I do not then everytime I print a copy of the BOM then I will see 2 materials with the same item numbers listed. Can anyone help me to understand this?

You'd have to use change management, create a change number with valid from date as the day on which you want the component to be replaced, use that change number to delete "1234" and add the "5678", now whenever PP master data is read (either automatically during production order creation or manually during order change) with explosion date as on or after that date 5678 will be automatically exploded into the production order.

Incase material 1234 will forever not be in use, amend BOM by replace this material with material 5678.

Where used list for both material can be tracked in BOM changes.
