SAP uses leg determination to break down a shipment into stages:

  • Preliminary leg: From shipping point to consolidation point
  • Main leg: From consolidation point to destination region
  • Subsequent leg: From destination region to final delivery point

Changing the Ship-To address can trigger a reclassification of the route, especially if:

  • the new address is in a different region or country
  • the system identifies a need for an additional transport stage

When the Ship-To address is modified, SAP recalculates the route and determines that the new address requires an additional leg. This is common when the new address is outside the original transportation zone

If the shipment type is configured to support multi-leg determination (leg indicator types 2, 3, 4, or 5), the system may automatically insert a subsequent leg to reflect the new logistics path

What you can do is Check leg determination settings in customizing (SPRO > Logistics Execution > Transportation > Shipment > Define Leg Determination). Review the route and transportation zone of the new Ship-To address. If the subsequent leg is not desired, consider adjusting:

  • Shipping conditions
  • Transportation zones
  • Leg determination rules
