Collect Costs on Sales order in Make to Order with project

Currently, we are searching for a solution to include project with milestone billing in a sales order. With the possibility to perform profitability analyses about the planned costs calculation for the sales order and the actual costs for the sales order. Scenario BJE is not sufficient for that purpose. This should me including all material costs, hours spend and production orders as well. What would be the best possible solution, is there a best practice for this scenario?

After creating the customer project, the sales order is generated automatically when setting up the billing plan (in App Plan Customer Projects, Billing tab). The sales order is a 1:1 copy of the project, meaning that for each project there is one sales order and for each billing item there is a corresponding sales order item.

The opposite behavior - that is, creating the sales order first and generating a customer project out of it - is not supported.
