Canonical data model for EDI messages

I would like to know who of you has decided to use a canocical data format for EDI? And if so: which one? Anything custom built or any existing standard?

Although in case that the EDI process is only connected to SAP ERP. Also here a canonical DF can help in case that the inhouse format changes (for example another IDOC or webservice in S4HANA) or a second ERP system (Business One, etc.) should be connected as well.

Would be great if you share your experience with me.
