Cannot use alternate BOM 1

We have two alternate BOMs and Production Versions for a semi--finished material. When we select the first production version, it uses the second Production Version/BOM. When we select the second production version it also uses the second Production Version/BOM. 

Other odd things, the second BOM does not allow for entry of the Valid From date. When we add a component, it automatically fills in the current date and does not allow it to be changed. 

Things I have checked:

• Both BOMs are active
• No deletion flags are set
• The production versions are linked to the correct alternate BOMs

Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

It could due to the Bom Usage involved . There is standard delivered customizing in 

Define Order of Priority for BOM Usages but maybe for the production version involved a usage is selected that  doesnt have an entry in Define Order of Priority for BOM Usages

Unfortunately its not mention what usage you are using but its the only thing i can think of
