Asset Accounting Number Range Behavior

Hi All,

I have always wondered why we need to change the settings for our asset accounting number range from external assignment to internal assignment when upgrading from 4.7 to ECC 6.0. Now I've also noticed that after changing the settings from external to internal number assignment, the system cannot recognize the next available number to be assigned when I run the depreciation run. Therefore, it would revert back to the first number in the number range instead of the next available number. This leads to the discontinuing of the document number assignment for assets. Can someone please explain the logic behind these changes so we can better understand the system's behavior? Thank you very much!

Hi,

It is better to have an external number range when you do an upgrade because you can have the same asset number in the newer version as it was in legacy system. Once you are done with the legacy upload than you change the external number to internal, and do not forget to enter the current number as the last used number + 1 so that when you are creating an asset it takes the number from the current number.

After 4.6C the Internal Number Range was changed into external Number Range due to technical requirements.

Note 890976 helps to get clear idea.

Hi,

I've read the said note as I did some research before posting this thread. However, it does not explain the logic behind the changes that I've mentioned. Can someone please elaborate as to the reason of the change and why it cannot recognize the next available number in the said number range. Thank you!
