Warehouse Management in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition 2408 Release – What’s New
It is our pleasure to share our innovations for Warehouse Management in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition 2408 release. Please follow this link to the What’s new presentation.
The innovations are mainly in the area of core functionality and integration as there are some great new core features such as partial goods receipt posting, or the warehouse driven outbound delivery order split but also API improvements such as the posting change operation for the Physical Stock API.
I’d like to thank everyone involved in delivering these innovations, first and foremost our engineering colleagues, who once again made sure that we can announce great features. Let’s jump right into it, starting with the partial goods receipt posting.
CORE FUNCTION
Partial Goods Receipt Posting
When a delivery arrives at the warehouse, the pallets are usually unloaded one by one and sometimes the putaway process shall start immediately. To do so, it is necessary to post goods receipt for the handling unit to then create the putaway warehouse task. This is possible now, instead of only being able to post goods receipt for the whole inbound delivery, which would require to first unload all pallets and to check them for completeness before starting the putaway process.
This feature is available as a new method in the warehouse monitor but also as a new button in the RF transaction “Receive HU by …” and via the Handling Unit API:

Purchase Order Reference in Warehouse Task
Speaking of putaway warehouse tasks - as of 2408, they contain a reference to the related purchase order. The same holds true for the goods receipt document. The main motivation to introduce this is to also have a reference when using the app “Post Goods Movement” (MIGO) to do a synchronous goods receipt posting to a storage bin based on the purchase order. In this case, the inbound delivery is not required which would usually be stored as the reference in the warehouse task and goods receipt document. But also when working with an inbound delivery, the purchase order will be stored as an additional reference.

Delivery Split for Outbound Delivery Order
Moving to the outbound process, starting with the delivery split for outbound delivery orders which comes in two flavors to cover two different use cases:
The first variant is an early split to split open quantities into a new outbound delivery order. In this case, open quantities translate to the delivery item quantities for which no picking warehouse task have been created yet. A common use case for this variant is that while trying to create the picking warehouse tasks for the full quantities of all delivery items, not all quantities could be met. For some items no warehouse tasks may have been created at all, for others only warehouse tasks for partial quantities and then again for some other items the warehouse tasks were created for the full quantity. Now the warehouse clerk may decide that the picking shall still start and since it is an urgent delivery the partial quantities shall be shipped while the remaining quantities will be shipped with a later delivery. In this case it is very beneficial to split the open quantities into a new outbound delivery order.
App: Warehouse Monitor: Split open quantities from outbound delivery order
The second variant is a late split with which you can split handling units into a new outbound delivery order. This is relevant for the use case that picking, packing, and staging has been completed but during loading it becomes obvious that not all handling units fit into the truck. It is then not required anymore to perform a picking cancellation – instead the handling units can be split into a new outbound delivery order and the original outbound delivery order can be posted goods issue.

This process is not yet supported when the outbound delivery order is also integrated to transportation management but enabling this is already part of the roadmap.
Generation of Packaging Items for Outbound Delivery Orders
Handling units also play an important role in the next feature: The generation of packaging items for outbound delivery orders. It is a common requirement for customers to keep stock count of their packaging materials or to run their returnable account management with SAP Returnable Packaging Management. A prerequisite for both is that when you ship products that are packed into handling units, there is also a goods issue posting for the packaging materials. With this feature, an additional packaging item with the corresponding quantity based on the number of handling units is created for each packaging material upon goods issue posting or setting the shipping readiness status for the outbound delivery order, ensuring that also the packaging materials are posted goods issue. The feature can be activated on the level of packaging material type and document type.

INTEGRATION
Specify Handing Unit in Synchronous Goods Issue
This feature is per se not only API related and also a new feature as such, but its main use case and origin of the requirement is in the context of integrating a manufacturing execution system. If the stock on the production supply area is managed in handling units and there are multiple handling units of the same product on the storage bin, then it is necessary that the operator records the handling unit during the consumption posting to maintain a correct stock count in SAP. Therefore, the synchronous goods issue postings for a manufacturing order or a reservation support as of this release to specify a handling unit. This is possible in the app “Post Goods Movement” (MIGO) as well as with the Production Order Confirmation API.

Physical Stock API: Action for Stock Type Change
With this innovation, the Physical Stock API is enriched by a new action ChangeStockType. This action enables the caller to define that a certain quantity of a certain physical stock item shall be posted to a new stock type, e.g. from blocked stock to free stock.
