For SAP ERP customers, transport management is the "control" that they have to decide when and what functionality in SAP system they'd like to introduce to their business users. With the introduction of 3-system landscape, S/4HANA public cloud customer can also have more flexibility when moving configuration settings and developments to their productive system.
To help our S/4HANA public cloud customer to get used to the these new features and take advantage of the flexibility that these features bring, SAP Activate has the following tasks on transports to help with our customer's journey.
Summary of SAP Activate tasks on Transport Management
In the beginning of Realize phase, upon receiving notification of provisioned Development system, customer needs to use SAP Central Business Configuration to setup the
Customizing and
Development tenant in their Development System. This initial transport created from SAP Central Business Configuration includes the reference configuration setting of selected scope for the selected country/region, mandatory organization structure that needs to be maintained per the result of fit-to-standard workshop for the selected scope items, and critical financial settings like fiscal year variant and group currency. It is important to note that this transport should be the
first transport to be deployed from
Customizing Tenant of S/4HANA Development System to
Test and
Production System upon receiving of the respective provisioned systems before any activities or transactions in these systems, including user creations.
Subsequently, configuration activities can be carried out via SAP Central Business Configuration. Although accessed from SAP Central Business Configuration, settings maintained are stored in
Customizing Tenant of S/4HANA Development System
, which can then be
moved across system landscapes after successful testing.
Development of key user extension and creation of custom
business roles starts in the
Customizing Tenant of Development System; while the
developer extension starts in
Development Tenant of Development System. It is common to have
incremental addition of scope item or country/region after the initial activation.
The diagram below shows a sample sequence of transport cycles of an implementation project. It is important to note that not all configuration activities accessed from SAP Central Business Configuration are transportable. There are settings and data used in configuration settings need to be
replicated or created manually in each respective S/4HANA system. Very often, in order to enable business process, there are more than one type of transports are needed. It is the best to group them into sprint of 1 to 2 weeks and move related transport requests together to avoid errors caused by dependency issues.
