How does customers manage transfer of design information to production? How to bridge the gap between Engineering and Manufacturing stages?
Transferring Product Data from Engineering to Manufacturing is one of the most critical processes for any manufacturing company. Mistakes here will easily lead to higher costs, missed time targets and quality issues.
Let me show you in this blog in a step-by-step process of how a Production Engineer can easily load a Engineering BOM as a reference and derive a Manufacturing BOM by planning, restructuring and add Manufacturing consumables to the Manufacturing BOM.
Intelligent Handover is a capability of SAP Enterprise Product development which empowers Production Engineers to simplify and accelerate the transformation and synchronization of Engineering Bill of Material information into Manufacturing Bill of Material.
Product Life Cycle from Design to Operate
It bridges the gap between Engineering and Manufacturing by managing dependencies between source and target structures – namely EBOMs and MBOMs. It does that by (semi-)automating the incorporation of changes that may occur on either side, supporting the user by finding strategies for reconciliation and initial creation of the target structure and it will check for consistency. Be it in terms of used material or quantity consumption.
User having a role of Production Engineer/Administrator role can access our application in the EPD capability. The user who will be using the application will be a Production engineer to derive a Manufacturing BOM from a Engineering Bom in the plant he is responsible for.
The below diagram shows a process flow for initiating a handover for creating a target manufacturing BOM from a source engineering BOM performed by Production engineer.
Process Flow
initiates a Handover process as the first step by searching for an Engineering BOM in the Worklist application. User selects the EBOM and clicks on Create Handover option where the EBOM details are prefilled for the Source and user maintains the Target Usage, Plant, validity, and description. The user will be navigated to the Planner application where the Engineering BOM will be loaded in the Source panel and a default node for the target MBOM is created in the target panel.
Worklist Application
Initiate Handover
The user can explode the BOM into a multilevel hierarchy by selecting components which have an assembly indicator. He can now click on the “Load EBOM” option. If there are multiple alternatives present in the system for the BOM, the user can choose which alternative he wants to load. The respective BoM will be loaded as part of the Source structure available for planning.

Source BOM expanded to multi level hierarchy
The Production Engineer can now plan the components from Source to Target. He has the following options to create the target manufacturing BOM:
Plan As Design option
Sub-Assembly planned
Plan as Selected
Drag and Drop
The Production Engineer selects the target node under which an additional manufacturing component shall be loaded. This scenario comes up when the component is consumed during manufacturing but not part of the Design structure. One example may be Oil to lubricate a sub-assembly. User clicks on “Add BOM Items” to search and select the BOM Items into a selected assembly or component in the Target panel.
Add Component feature
User can check whether the component planned is completely consumed in the target or not by checking the status associated with the node. If the component is planned more than what is available in the source, then a status “Quantity Overconsumed” is maintained otherwise if the component quantity is maintained less in the target tree than what is available in the source tree, then a status “Quantity Under consumed” is maintained for the target Node.
Quantity consistency checks
User can select the option – Highlight by selecting either the source or the target component and by clicking on the option, the corresponding node in the other panel will get highlighted. This option will allow user to identify the source component from which a particular target component got derived from as shown in the above figure.
After completing the planning and finalizing the target BOM user can click on “Publish” to synchronize the data back to S4/HANA to create the target Manufacturing BOM there. Once published and successfully completed then an alternative for the MBOM will be created in the SAP S/4HANA system and status of the Handover activity will be updated to “Published”.
Publish option in Planner application
Synchronization of data successfully
User can click on “Release” option in the handover activity which will set the status of the planning as “Released” and will not allow users to not maintain the target BOM in the planner application further.
