In March 2013 I had the honor to host this year’s Innovation Challenge at the SAPInsider conference in LasVegas (see this link for all the details) and together with a huge audience I saw great mobile solutions built and presented by our partners. One month later my colleague Julia Zinovyeva moderated the “European version” of the SAP Innovation Challenge for Mobile Manufacturing Solutions at the SAP Insider conference in Prague. And we again had the chance to see amazing mobile applications for manufacturing scenarios developed by our partners. This article focuses on the European event of the Innovation Challenge.
For those of you who are not familiar with this partner “contest”, here’s an overview what it’s all about:
SAP Partner companies werechallenged to create the most valuable and inspiring mobile application for manufacturing scenarios. Out of many submissions 3 companies were invited to showcase their mobile solution at one of the SAPInsider conferences in either Las Vegas or Prague, 2013.
The 3 finalists of the Prague event were: Tieto, Systema and Atos. They all showcased great mobile solutions live on stage at the SAPInsider conference in Prague on April 25. The following solutions were presented:
Mobile Mill Hub (by Tieto):
Comprehensive app for production/plant managers combining ERP, SCM and MES data.
Rework Station App (by Systema):
Mobile solution for reacting on production errors in real-time for workers and supervisors.
Integrated Manufacturing Platform (by Atos):
Comprehensive mobile app for different manufacturing roles combining ERP and SAP ME data (incl. HANA).
Now it was up to the jury to select the overall winner of the SAP Innovation Challenge. This time every member of the audience who had a smartphone or tablet PC could be part of the jury. All they needed to do was scanning a barcode with their mobile device.Immediately a webpage was displayed which showed a voting screen for the 3 mobile apps. This page was built especially for this Innovation Challenge based on our SAP MII product.
Now each app had to be rated according to the following criteria: Business value, design and innovation. At the end the final winner was Thomas Schenk (Tieto) who showed a very comprehensive mobile app for production and plant managers. He had a small lead over Systema and Atos who as well gave great demos of their mobile solutions!

Overall this session was very well received by the audience and showed in a great way the status quo and the future of mobile solutions in Manufacturing. Thus we are looking to extend this Innovation Challenge to other areas, like e.g. PLM, EAM, etc. next year and make it an even bigger show!
Yours
