Dear Colleagues,

As our team further enhances and expands the Digital Manufacturing S/4HANA product portfolio in support of Intelligent Factory, we're excited to announce the October release of the SAP S/4HANA 2022 version of SAP S/4HANA Manufacturing for Production Engineering and Operations.

With this latest release, SAP continues to add customer value and strengthen our position in discrete, complex manufacturing environments. Enhancement requests from SAP’s ongoing multi-customer engagement initiatives have been identified and included – significantly adding depth and breadth to the product’s capabilities.

Complex manufacturers will benefit from the following new solution capabilities delivered in this 2022 S/4HANA release:

Production Integration Portal (PIP)

A recent innovation highlight is the production integration portal (PIP). It enables the integration of relevant information sources into SAP S/4HANA Manufacturing for production engineering and operations (PEO) to facilitate the direct reuse of this information during the design phase of your production process.

Product manufacturing information (PMI) has been available in the shop floor routing in previous releases. From release S/4HANA 2022, the manufacturing process definition (MPD) is also available to support creation of the shop floor routing.

With this new feature, you can receive MPD files from an external system to SAP S/4HANA PEO and then create mapping between the source files and the corresponding PEO target objects. The production engineer can then consume this directly in the routing, to model the production process. Concurrently, a new version of manufacturing snapshot is generated as a change coordination package [these contain updates of MBOMs and manufacturing process definitions (MPD), plus optionally corresponding 3D visuals and product manufacturing information (PMI)].

You can monitor incoming manufacturing snapshots in the Monitor Snapshots app and trigger the production engineering process by creating a change record (CR).

In the PIP workspace of shopfloor routing, you can see the new source file version and items before handing over to shopfloor routing.

Installation Kit Relationship

Complex assembly processes are supported by project driven manufacturing of major assemblies. To divide work into manageable tasks, production engineers group components into installation kit MBOMs. Then, a project is created for every end item instance, with a WBS element and a network for every major assembly, and a network activity for every installation kit. Every network activity has component demand for the installation kit.

Network activities may have to be executed in a certain sequence. The sequence in which network activities shall be executed is defined by predecessor relationships in the network. With this new release, it's now possible to define such predecessor relationships in VEMP when defining major assembly MBOMs. Defining relationships between MBOM items (installation kits) of a major assembly lets you create network activities with predecessor relationships for projects.

Visual Context

Visual context in VEMP enables production engineers to plan the installation of components for complex products. Production engineers need visual context during planning to ensure the overall physical compatibility of components, particularly when breaking down a major assembly into smaller installation kits.

With this release, the Visual Context is enhanced to show other major Assemblies and Installation Kits in the graphics viewport using the 3D visuals from the Engineering Snapshot.

Visibility Filter

VEMP now supports visibility filters that you can apply to offset (for example, hide or highlight) BOM items based on certain attributes - such as model and unit. This allows production engineers to easily check what they’ve planned for the 100% BOM or check a subset of BOM items. Visibility filters also take effect on any visual context in the graphics viewport.

・Standard Visibility Filter

SAP ships a preconfigured Parameter Effectivity visibility filter. You can apply this filter to check whether the BOM for a particular model and unit has been planned correctly.

・Custom Visibility Filter

VEMP also provides an option to implement custom visibility filters based on other attributes, for example, from BOM items or attributes derived from BOM details. You can create custom visibility filters in Customizing with a BADI implementation.

Handling Disassembly in VEMP

Complex assemblies may have components that need to be disassembled. With this release, VEMP supports the handover of disassembly components from source to target. During the handover, you can change the item type of the component from Assembly Component to Disassembly Component or vice-versa.

To assemble, disassemble or reassemble across multiple installation kits, you can create multiple occurrences in MBOM from the same component in EBOM. The system reconciles the source and target components to ensure that the original intent of the component in the source BOM is met and the component is fully incorporated in the target BOM.

Order Activity Processing for Serial Numbers in Group

Customers working in complex manufacturing industries often have to produce subassemblies such as standardized parts that need to undergo the same fabrication process - such as cutting, bending, assembling, hardening, and so on. They're then later used in the final assembly process.

With collective processing of serial numbers, you can now group serial numbers and perform the action once, for all serial numbers in that group. The system still records the data individually for each serial number in that group, so you still have full traceability and analysis options.

Cross-Activity Component Data Collection

The component Data Collection feature allows you to create an inspection characteristic for a component that is assembled at the same operation activity for which you're defining the inspection characteristic. With this new release, a component data collection isn't necessarily done at the operation activity where the component is assembled but at a later point in time at a different operation activity.

In the example below, the component Air Filter is assembled in activity OA11, but in the next activity where the air filter casing is assembled, the air filter needs to be test again. The inspection data against the air filter can be captured in OA12 as well.

Test Equipment (PRT) for Inspection Data Collection

With this release, the production engineer can define Test Equipment (PRT) during data collection. This information is available to the shop floor worker during order.

Discrete manufacturing companies now have additional advanced solution capabilities to manage and support complex build processes resulting from changes in the design structures, manufacturing BOMs, routings, work instructions, and production orders. Leveraging the new capabilities, customers continue to proactively manage manufacturing dynamics minimizing production disruptions while proactively managing and monitoring production operations. Customers will benefit from the enhanced, comprehensive, and simplified S/4 user experience, which seamlessly enables design, process planning, change management, and shop floor execution. all within one integrated S/4HANA environment.
