This blog provides an overview about the enhancements provided to Enterprise Portfolio and Project Management (EPPM) delivered throughout the year 2022. It covers the highlights of SAP S/4HANA 2021 FPS1 and FPS2, as well as SAP S/4HANA 2022. More detailed information about the delivered features per release are available here:

Project System Enhancements

Project Financial Planning

With SAP S/4HANA 2022, project-related Easy Cost Planning and Network Costing are integrated to SAP S/4HANA financial planning. If activated in customizing, Easy Cost Planning and Network Costing are extended to enable storage of financial values to ACDOCP, the main table for financial planning values in SAP S/4HANA, in addition to storage in CO tables. There will be more detailed blogs on Project Financial Planning enhancements coming soon.

Key User Extensibility

Support of key user extensilibity fields provided in the previous releases has been extended by enabling field control for project-related extensibility fields through business add-ins (BAdIs) (SAP S/4HANA 2021 FPS2). With SAP S/4HANA 2022 key user extensibility fields are also supported in Progress Tracking and Progress Analysis Workbench. Extensibility fields can now be used as selection criteria in progress tracking for WBS elements, network activities, material components and purchase orders. In Progress Analysis Workbench the fields can be included in the output table.

PS Text

Management of project related texts and documents has been modernized through a new project system text (PS text) solution based on attachment services and note capabilities. You can now use the SAP Fiori app Project Text to manage PS texts centrally. Existing PS texts can be migrated to the new solution through a migration report. These features are available as of SAP S/4HANA 2021 FPS1.

With the SAP S/4HANA 2022 release archived PS texts, stored in the modernized PS Text persistency, can also be displayed in Project Builder.

Multilanguage Short Texts

Archiving features for multilanguage short texts have been enhanced. They can now be archived along with other project data (SAP S/4HANA 2021 FPS2) and archived multilanguage short texts can be displayed directly in Project Builder (SAP S/4HANA 2022).

In addition, project-related SAP Fiori apps (i.e. Project, WBS element, Network etc. Detail and Overview page) support reading of multilanguage short texts. If a short text is maintained in the logon language, this short text is displayed in the SAP Fiori app (SAP S/4HANA 2021 FPS2).

Project Claim

Project Claim has been modernized by provisioning of a Read API, that allows you to read the master data and status of a project claim. In SAP S/4HANA 2022 a new SAP Fiori app Project Claim Overview is available.

The app provides a number of filters and search capabilities that can be used to get an overview of claims. Navigation to the details page for claims (read-only) as well as to classic transactions to display or edit Project Claims is available. This semantic navigation is also available for other business objects, e.g. Project or WBS element.

APIs for Project System

Stable and well documented interfaces are one of the central prerequisites for SAP, customers and partners to build robust integration scenarios or extend the software based on their requirements. For Project System in the SAP S/4HANA 2022 release the following OData APIs are available.
- Create, Read, Update and Delete API for Projects and WBS elements
- Read API for Project Claim
- Read API for Project Network

For WBS elements business events are available for creation, change, deletion, status change and position change.

In addition to the above mentioned, quite a number of smaller enhancements have been provided during 2022. These include e.g.

  • Ability to use a new dynamic item processor source to read actual costs from the universal journal. This allows for an optimized actual costs processing in resource-related billing.

  • Provide options for WBS element to:

    • Change and check selected WBS element settlement rule parameters

    • Use substitution and validation options in project systems to do so

Portfolio and Project Management Enhancements

Integration to requirements management

With SAP S/4HANA 2021 FPS1 you can interrelate requirements and systems engineering objects  with portfolio items, projects and project tasks. Integration between PPM and requirements management of SAP Enterprise Product Development (EPD) allows engineers to navigate from a product based view of their requirements directly to the related tasks in the project.

Project Gantt enhancements

The project Gantt chart has received some additions, the enhancements are collected in summary note 3131870. These enhancements are not only available in SAP S/4HANA, but also in PPM 6.1. Focus of the enhancements is mainly the area of relationship handling. A new context menu, that displays all relationships of a selected task, is available.

The graphic below shows an example for highlighting of related tasks. Depending on the user selection, either only the direct predecessor/successor tasks are highlighted or the entire chain of related tasks can be visualized.
