In this exciting installment, we spotlight the incredible journey of Grupo Nabeiro, a Portugal-based coffee powerhouse, and their impressive strides in the complex market of Angola.
In the aromatic and culturally rich world of coffee, stories of growth, triumph, and innovation abound. Among these, the journey of Portugal-based Grupo Nabeiro stands out as a remarkable tale of perseverance and transformation. Celebrating over 61 years of operation, the company, founded by Manuel Rui Azinhais Nabeiro, affectionately known as Mr. Rui Nabeiro, has woven an inspiring narrative of overcoming challenges in one of the world's most complex yet rewarding markets – Angola.
Grupo Nabeiro’s journey, which began in 1961 with a small coffee startup in Campo Maior, Portugal, has now expanded its footprints across eight countries. This transformation from a local coffee roaster to an international powerhouse is nothing short of extraordinary. Mr. Nabeiro’s vision was not simply about business but about touching lives and empowering communities through the universal language of coffee.
This commitment to transformation and resilience resonated profoundly with Mr. Jose Beato, the Managing Director of Africa and Latin America for Grupo Nabeiro. During our conversation, Mr. Beato shared insightful stories about Grupo Nabeiro's remarkable transformation journey, particularly their significant ventures in Angola and managing local regulatory compliance.
One of Mr. Nabeiro's most significant business moves was the company's successful entry into Angola. Unlike any previous logistical endeavours, entering the Angolan market was no simple feat. The company had to adapt to a less developed business environment while complying with local regulations.
Successfully entering the Angolan market required Grupo Nabeiro to overcome various operational challenges, particularly in meeting local tax and regulatory requirements. Under Mr. Nabeiro's leadership, the company embarked on a mission to address these challenges without hindering business operations.
In 2019, the implementation of the Value-Added Tax (VAT) system in Angola marked a significant shift in the local economy. Recognizing the need for robust digital solutions, Grupo Nabeiro adopted SAP to streamline its operations and ensure compliance with the new tax regulations. This technological integration proved beneficial throughout their growth journey, allowing them to manage their business processes efficiently even in a complex environment.
An important achievement and testament to their preparedness and quick adaptation was successfully implementing SAF-T (Standard Audit File for Tax) compliance, a measure adopted by the Angolan authorities. By leveraging capabilities of SAP Document and Reporting Compliance, Grupo Nabeiro not only championed this critical transition smoothly but also led the process with local authorities, ensuring that they remained at the forefront of digital compliance.
The implementation of SAP facilitated the company's efficient handling of regulatory requirements and operational challenges, allowing it to focus on its mission of growth and sustainability in Angola. The benefits of localization through SAP enabled Grupo Nabeiro to remain agile and responsive in a complex market, ensuring their long-term success and commitment to the local economy.
Grupo Nabeiro’s presence in Angola is grounded in environmental and social sustainability. The company began buying coffee from local farmers, offering fair prices and restoring an industry devastated by a 40-year war.
"We decided to buy coffee from local farmers, offering fair prices, and to reestablish the virtually extinct coffee industry," notes Mr. Beato. "We began purchasing coffee from local producers step by step, visiting areas that had not seen buyers in decades."
By 2000, Grupo Nabeiro started selling Delta coffee in Angola, and by 2001, they began industrial roasting operations of Ginga coffee. Ginga, named after an ancient queen renowned for her resistance against European colonization, had deep cultural significance and symbolized resilience to the Angolan people.
Mr. Beato’s decade-long experience in Angola was transformative. He forged profound connections with local culture and people through the coffee revival efforts. "My life experience there was profound," recounts Mr. Beato. " I will be a little bit always African for my life."
Grupo Nabeiro's localized approach has brought sustainable change, aiding local farmers and revitalizing small-scale coffee farming in remote areas lacking infrastructure.
Grupo Nabeiro’s journey from a humble coffee venture in Portugal to an international powerhouse underscores the importance of localization. By leveraging SAP’s localized capabilities, Grupo Nabeiro successfully navigated Angola’s complex regulatory environment and ensured sustainable business growth. Their commitment to supporting local farmers and adhering to local regulations highlights the power of a strong entrepreneurial spirit and a deep understanding of local markets.
As Grupo Nabeiro continues to transform its business and explore new territories, their journey in Angola serves as a testament to the values and benefits of localization, demonstrating the importance of adapting to and understanding local markets while fostering sustainable growth.
