Respond to trends and challenges in the utilities industry

Utility companies are facing tremendous fundamental changes in their business model caused by the appearance of new technologies such as Smart Grids and Smart Meter or by the rising demand for renewable energy as requested from the consumer side. In addition to this  business transformation topics new governmental regulations and compliance requirements force utility companies to invest in the modernization of existing assets and infrastructure or even consider the construction of new ones.

To respond to these trends and forces in the market a utility company faces a huge number of investment projects ranging from minor maintenance projects e.g. to replace an outdated pump or valve up to building a completely new power plant forced by governmental directives to accelerate an exit from nuclear and fossil energy generation.

Do the right investment projects

This puts these companies in a situation where they need to carefully plan their capital investments for the future, since based on these decisions financial and capacity resources are locked down for decades. After a decision has been made for such a large project, there are only a few possibilities to correct the decison without major financial loss. In addition utilities need to balance their investments in a way that they can ensure the continuation of the operative business, while at the same time they prepare for changing the business model to meet the new requirements in the new market. This results nowadays in an increasing  demand for establishing a portfolio management discipline within these organizations with the goal to make better and more structured investment decisions. To be able to achieve this goal, utilities are also striving for IT solutions that can cover the entire process, from the initial investment proposal, over project planning and up to the project execution and monitoring of actuals vs. planned and forecasted costs and efforts.
