SAP Activate methodology accelerates learning and facilitates the identification of requirements in the fit-to-standard workshops by using pre-configuration and sample data. In the Realize phase, the pre-configuration can be tailored to the requirements, however, the sample data must always be replaced with real customer data. Fortunately, the
SAP S/4HANA migration cockpit, embedded in SAP S/4HANA Cloud, along with SAP Activate methodology provides the framework to learn and execute data migration in your project. In the paragraphs below, I will show how the migration cockpit fits into the overall project implementation flow using the SAP S/4HANA Cloud Activate roadmap.

PREPARE - Customer Team Self-Enablement
The tasks in the
Customer Team Self-enablement deliverable provides links to learning materials that provide a knowledge foundation on the product and tools used during an implementation. The task,
Self-Enable on SAP S/4HANA Migration Cockpit, has links to the SAP Best Practices Setup Guide, Data Migration Help Portal, SAP S/4HANA migration cockpit Community, and SAP S/4HANA Cloud Tutorials. Each accelerator provides a smooth flow to help new and experience users find the information that they need.
PREPARE - Data Migration Approach and Strategy
The effort and timeline required to migrate data are often underestimated. Therefore, a good strategy and plan can help reduce the risk that data migration will not be the bottleneck and cause delays. The task
Develop the Data Migration Approach and Strategy prompts creation of the strategy document and provides several considerations to be included. Since S/4HANA Cloud uses a two-tier landscape, additional planning is recommended to test data loads in small but comprehensive sample sets.
EXPLORE - Fit-to-Standard Analysis
Although there are no tasks directly related to data migration in the
Fit-to-Standard Analysis deliverable, the fit-to-standard workshops are essential for determining the business scenarios that are in scope and the data that will be required to run those processes. The data migration experts will use this information to determine the migration objects and acceptable values.
EXPLORE - Data Load Preparation
Now that data migration experts have been trained, a strategy developed, scenarios scoped and data requirements determined, they can begin work on the migration. Included in the
Data Load Preparation deliverable are the following tasks:
- Determine the Required Master Data and Transactional Data for S/4HANA Cloud
- Determine Migration Cockpit Field Structures for S/4HANA Cloud
- Define Specifications for Data Extraction from a Legacy System
- Perform Data Cleansing Activities
These tasks represent the process flow that will identify, define and populate templates that can be loaded in into the S/4HANA Cloud system. Some testing of the migration tool can occur in explore, however, the actual data migration occurs in Realize when the configuration has been completed. Additionally, data dependencies are identified and documented as they will become the first draft of the data cutover plan.
REALIZE - Data Migration
In the Realize phase and once the solution has been configured in the quality system, the data migration can be executed and verified. The migrated data then supports user acceptance testing. The following tasks are in the deliverable
Data Migration. Please note that the process is followed for each migration object.
- Fill the Migration Templates
- Load Data into the Staging Tables of SAP S/4HANA Migration Cockpit
- Validate Data & Perform Value Mapping
- Simulate Data Migration
- Execute Data Migration
- Conduct Final Data Quality Assessment
The deliverable is listed in SAP Activate after the Solution Walkthrough, however, as configurations are completed sooner, sample data sets should be tested earlier.
REALIZE - Cutover Preparation
In SAP Activate, we include data migration into the production system in the cutover plan. The cutover plan manages all the tasks (data migration plus other required business and system tasks) and the dependencies required to transition to the new system. The plan is inclusive of the steps to stop the legacy processes, prepare the production system for use, and transition to productive use of the new system. The SAP Activate task
Create Cutover Plan and Documentation provides the procedure to complete and verify the plan.
DEPLOY - Execute Cutover Tasks per the Cutover Plan
At last, the go-live is nearing and cutover process is to start. The task
Execute Cutover Tasks per the Cutover Plan contains the procedure and the cutover plan manages the details. The result of the completion of the cutover plan is a successful start to productive use of the SAP S/4HANA Cloud system.
In summary, SAP Activate provides the needed content at the point in the project that the content is relevant. See the SAP S/4HANA Cloud roadmap and stream
Data Management for all of the details. The roadmap relies heavily on the
Data Migration help documentation which is an excellent resource on the use of the data migration cockpit.
