In late 2019, we performed an upgrade of S/4HANA from 1809 to 1909 for a major international CPG client.

Here is a quick post to capture the Lessons Learned from technical perspective.

# Lessons Learned When to Act? Comments
1 Ensure to check compatibility of installed add-ons. Before upgrade

  • Refer SAP OSS note 2214409.

  • Some of the add-ons installed were not compatible with 1909 and we had to remove them.

2 Ensure to review and act on unused ABAP objects Before upgrade

  • Review and Remove temporary tables.

  • Remove or activate inactive objects.

  • Delete $TMP objects which are not in use or inactivated.

3 Refresh SAPUI5 Extended apps manifest.json files. Before (& after)

  • Refer SAP online help.

  • Copy the "sap.ui5" and "sap.fiori" sections of the original manifest.json to the manifest.json of your new extended project.

4 Ensure to perform  BASIS activities Before upgrade

  • Clean-up data extractor queues.

  • Remove old update entries (t-code SM13).

  • Deactivate SLT replication during the upgrade window.

5 Avoid error on "objects found without delivery transport". During upgrade

  • Refer SAP OSS note 2408272 for resolution steps.

6 Prevent Product Hierarchy data loss. During upgrade

  • Refer SAP notes 927249 and 664860 for resolution steps.

Of course, this post is not a one-stop place for 1909 upgrade.

You still need to go through the standard documents and usual activities.

The main ones are:

Wish you all the very best for your S/4HANA and 1909 journey!
