In late 2019, we performed an upgrade of S/4HANA from 1809 to 1909 for a major international CPG client.
Here is a quick post to capture the Lessons Learned from technical perspective.

Ensure to check compatibility of installed add-ons. |
Before upgrade |
- Refer SAP OSS note 2214409.
- Some of the add-ons installed were not compatible with 1909 and we had to remove them.

Ensure to review and act on unused ABAP objects |

- Review and Remove temporary tables.
- Remove or activate inactive objects.
- Delete $TMP objects which are not in use or inactivated.

Refresh SAPUI5 Extended apps manifest.json files. |

- Refer SAP online help.
- Copy the "sap.ui5" and "sap.fiori" sections of the original manifest.json to the manifest.json of your new extended project.

Ensure to perform BASIS activities |
Before upgrade |
- Clean-up data extractor queues.
- Remove old update entries (t-code SM13).
- Deactivate SLT replication during the upgrade window.
