S/4HANA Extended Production Engineering and Operations (PEO) Part 1 – Configuration Settings
The major focus on this blog is to cover Mode-Unit Effectivity (Parameter Effectivity) configuration steps to configure in the PEO module.
When you process an object (such as a BOM item) using a particular change number for the first time, the system generates a new processing status ( change state ). If your organization does not use parameter effectivity, these changes simply have time-related validity, which means that a change state's validity extends from its valid-from date to immediately before the valid-from date of the changing state following.
The following are the important configuration steps.
- Define Parameters
- Define Effectivity Types
- Enter Descriptions of Effectivity Types
- Maintain Effectivity Profiles
- Enter Titles for Parameter Maintenance
- Set Control Data
- Configure Parameters for Product Unitization
- Define Additional Attributes for Material Type
Define Parameters
In this step define the effectivity parameters for effectivity types. These parameters will be used in the Define Effectivity type.
In the standard system, the following are the parameters delivered.
- DATE (date)
- SERNR (serial number)
- MATNR (material number)

Select New Entries and enter the following data
You assign one of the following parameter types to an effectivity parameter.
Type
|
In the change master record, a parameter can be assigned
|
Example:
|
S (single value)
|
A single value
|
You assign a single value 234.
|
I (closed interval)
|
A single value
A closed interval
|
You assign the closed interval "between 234 and 456 ".
|
O (open interval)
|
A single value
A closed interval
An open interval
|
You assign the open interval "greater than 456 ".
|
The domain of data element must be of type NUMC or CHAR and a maximum length of 30 characters, to an effectivity parameter.
Generate a transport request and activate the Data Element.
The following data elements will be created automatically and select those data elements into transport.
Define Effectivity Types
An effectivity type groups together one or more effectivity parameters.
SAP Customizing Implementation Guide -> Logistics - General -> Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) -> Engineering Change Management -> Parameter Effectivity -> Define Effectivity Types
Enter Descriptions of Effectivity Types
The previous step creates the effectivity types. In this step, you enter the language-dependent descriptions of effectivity types.
Maintain Effectivity Profiles
Effectivity profile is a group of settings for parameter effectivity types. An effectivity profile can be assigned to a client or certain materials. An effectivity profile restricts the number of effectivity types available, among those that are available in the chosen client or for the chosen material.
SAP Customizing Implementation Guide -> Logistics - General -> Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) -> Engineering Change Management -> Parameter Effectivity -> Maintain Effectivity Profiles
Enter the following data and save.
Enter Titles for Parameter Maintenance
In this step, adjust the description of parameters.
SAP Customizing Implementation Guide -> Logistics - General -> Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) -> Engineering Change Management -> Parameter Effectivity -> Enter Titles for Parameter Maintenance
Set Control Data
In this work step, you define central settings for engineering change management.
SAP Customizing Implementation Guide -> Logistics - General -> Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) -> Engineering Change Management -> Set Control Data
Select the Effectivity Profile created in the above step and activate the Parameter Effectivity indicator.
Configure Parameters for Product Unitization
This step configuration covered in another blog please refer to the first section of this blog to access it.
In this step, select the effectivity type to be used for unitization and semantically map effectivity parameters. A unitization parameter is a model, unit or a variant for which a component can be used.

Define Additional Attributes for Material Type
You assign the model-unit parameter effectivity to allow the system to recognize major assemblies, installation kits, and manufactured parts.
When processing major assemblies and installation kits, the system frequently has to differentiate end items and major assemblies from installation kits and regular materials. The differentiation is important in complex assembly, where the assembly of installation kits into major assemblies is controlled by projects but manufactured parts are assembled using production orders. The model-unit effectivity type is defined for this purpose.
SAP does not ship predefined material types for major assemblies and installation kits. Of course, you can create your own material types with the semantics of major assembly and installation kit. In such cases, you also have to maintain the dependent configuration of BOM and routing and any BAdI implementations for checking materials accordingly.
Create the following material types copying standard material types based on your requirement.
In Customizing for
Logistics - General, choose
- Copy material type FERT to create material type MASS (Major Assembly).
- Copy material type FERT to create material type EITM (End Item).
- Copy material type FERT to create material type IKIT (Installation Kit).
- Copy material type HALB to create material type UNFR (Finished Unitized Materials).
- Copy material type HALB to create material type UNSF (Semi-Finished Unitized Materials).
Once you define the material types then assign the Parameter Effectivity to Material Types to allow you to enter the Unitization.
SAP Customizing Implementation Guide -> Production -> Manufacturing for Production Engineering and Operations -> Cross-Applications -> Unitized Product -> Define Additional Attributes for Material Type
Enter the Material Type, Effectivity Type and Save.
Conclusion: Consultant able to configure the settings required to execute the parameter effectivity or Model-Unit Effectivity scenario in S/4HANA Extended Production Engineering and Operations module.
I would very much appreciate your comments and suggestions.
