Recently, I prototyped ‘Cartonization in EWM’ for a Cosmetic manufacturing company as a part of Proof of Concept(POC). They use complex custom program for cartonization with ECC LE-WM at present.  They simply loved the rich cartonization features with standard EWM. Embedded EWM’s cartonization functionality is becoming one of the main business drivers for their move to S/4HANA. This blog is to share the salient features of Cartonization with EWM.

Cartonization in EWM provides the option for early information of size and quantity of pallets. It creates  Planned shipping HU (PSHU) depending on the size / dimension (Weight, volume) of products and this PSHU is just a template prior to the creation of real Shipping HU. Below image shows that the system selected (automatically) small, medium, large box depending on the total weight and volume of products.

Standard SAP has an Algorithm MINH (Minimum number of HU) which offers minimum number of HU for the relevant products, also tries to minimize the white space to reduce damage. Below image shows that the system offered a large and small box instead of 3 medium sized boxes.  SAP has also provided BADIs’ to create custom algorithms to meet specific business requirements.

PSHU numbering starts with a $ sign and the real shipping HU also has a reference to PSHU as in below image. Note that , PSHU itself is not converted to real shipping HU , PSHU is a separate object in EWM.

SAP has provided the option to create PSHU at

  • Outbound delivery order

  • Waves

  • Warehouse order

And PSHU can be used at

  • Picking or

  • Packing

As shown in below figure

Functionality of Cartonization  is available with both Decentral and Embedded EWM.  However, embedded EWM requires additional license to use Cartonization.
