In the era of APIs, hybrid landscapes, and cloud-native development, it's easy to assume that methodologies like SAP ISA-M (Integration Solution Advisory Methodology) are outdated. But the truth is: ISA-M is more relevant than ever. It remains a strategic compass for defining and implementing integration architectures that are sustainable, business-aligned, and tool-agnostic.

🔍 What is SAP ISA-M?

SAP ISA-M is a structured methodology that helps enterprises define their integration strategy, classify integration use cases, and select the right technologies and governance models. It supports decision-making across cloud, hybrid, and on-premise landscapes – regardless of whether you’re using SAP Integration Suite, SAP Advanced Event Mesh, or third-party platforms.

🔑 Why ISA-M Still Matters Today

  1. Strategic Guidance for Cloud Transformation

ISA-M is widely used during S/4HANA and RISE with SAP transformations to assess legacy middleware (e.g., PI/PO) and design modern, API- and event-driven target architectures.

  1. Technology-Agnostic by Design

ISA-M is not tied to specific products. It provides a framework for integration strategy, which remains valid even as tools evolve – from SAP Process Orchestration to SAP Integration Suite and beyond.

  1. Use Case-Driven Approach

By analyzing integration needs across five integration styles (e.g., process integration, data integration, event-driven integration), ISA-M helps teams design purposeful and scalable architectures.

  1. Connecting Business and IT

The methodology fosters collaboration between business owners, architects, and integration teams – ensuring that integration becomes a business enabler, not just a technical necessity.

Where ISA-M is Used Today

Cloud Transformations & RISE with SAP

 Modernization of Legacy Interfaces

 Enablement & Governance Models

It outlines the phases in a modernization journey—Review, Scope and Define Use Cases—and shows how to transition towards a future-ready, hybrid integration platform.

  • Assess Integration Strategy
  • Review Existing Integration Architecture
  • Scope and Define Best Practices and Target Architecture
  • Give power to the people

🚀 Outlook: What’s Next for ISA-M?

🔧 1. ISA-M in INTAS – SAP Integration Assessment Service

SAP’s INTAS (Integration Assessment Service) is a structured offering to help customers evaluate and modernize their integration landscape. ISA-M provides the core methodology behind this service:

  • Assessment of legacy and custom interfaces
  • Mapping use cases to modern SAP Integration Suite capabilities
  • Tailored modernization roadmap aligned to Clean Core principles

With INTAS, organizations benefit from a guided modernization plan that is both strategic and executable.

I will give you some more insights in on of our upcoming Integration Modernization expert sessions: https://events.sap.com/expertsession-isam/en_us/home.html

🔗 2. ISA-M and the SAP Integrated Toolchain

The SAP Integrated Toolchain for Modernization Projects combines multiple SAP tools and services, such as:

  • SAP Cloud ALM
  • SAP Signavio
  • SAP LeanIX
  • SAP WalkMe
  • SAP BTP ( with our focus on Integration Suite)

We us ISA-M acts as a strategic layer below the toolchain, ensuring that all activities – from modeling to implementation – follow a consistent integration strategy. For example:

  • LeanIX is the central tool for your overall Enterprise Architecture  → ISA-M will help to control technologies and applications along the concept and to establish a government model
  • Signavio is used to model business processes → ISA-M helps derive integration patterns
  • SAP Integration Suite itself can be used to integrate the toolchain (itself) → ISA-M ensures style and governance fit, e.g. usage of SAP Advanced Event Mesh in combination with LeanIX Webhooks.

ISA-M connects the dots, providing strategic continuity across the entire toolchain.

We are currently working out an Integration Modernization expert which will give the required insights how you can implement it. Stay tune and follow our journey here https://events.sap.com/eur-sap-integration-modernization-expert-sessions/en_us/home.html

🧼  3. ISA-M and Clean Core

Clean Core is one of the key guiding principles in SAP’s modernization strategy. But a Clean Core isn’t just about avoiding modifications – it’s about separating business logic from system logic and creating modular, scalable architectures.

Here’s how ISA-M supports a Clean Core approach:

  • Recommends using APIs, events, and standardized integration styles
  • Avoids hard-coded dependencies between systems
  • Encourages centralized governance and reuse of services

By following ISA-M, companies are not just modernizing their interfaces – they are actively cleaning their core.

 Final Thoughts

Integration is no longer just a technical challenge – it’s a strategic business discipline. And while the tools and technologies evolve, the need for a methodical, business-aligned integration strategy remains constant.

That’s why ISA-M continues to be a critical success factor for integration modernization, clean core transformation, and cloud-centric architectures.

Whether you're just starting your transformation journey or reviewing an existing landscape, ISA-M gives you the structure, language, and clarity to do it right.
