SAP Fiori Innovation Day in Heidelberg was a great success. It was our third and final event in 2024, held on November 19 in our AppHaus in Heidelberg. The goal was to empower developers, architects, and technical consultants with knowledge on how to build SAP Fiori apps for SAP S/4HANA Cloud and all the new AI functionality that we are building into the SAP Fiori elements framework.

We started by asking the attendees to define SAP Fiori. Here’s what they came up with:

Our customers seem to be aligned with us on what SAP Fiori means.

It was very gratifying to see the results, as the participants have the same view of SAP Fiori that SAP does – a design system for creating modern and innovative user experiences.

We then launched into the day, showing examples of the SAP Fiori user experience across SAP S/4HANA, including many of the innovations that we have recently added to our public cloud version. The day proceeded as follows:

SAP Fiori is the face of SAP S/4HANA Cloud

The starting point for SAP S/4HANA Cloud is My Home. It provides an easy way to find and launch all your SAP Fiori apps. Most of those apps will be based on SAP Fiori elements. My Home includes a new “recommended” tab that uses AI to recommend apps to a user based on their role in the system. This makes it faster and easier for someone to get started with SAP S/4HANA.

From My Home, people launch the apps they need to complete their work. We use SAP Fiori elements to build around 80% of new apps for SAP S/4HANA Cloud. It saves developers time on creating the user interface, drives consistency across apps, and ensures that all the enterprise functionality that people expect (accessibility, internationalization, responsiveness, security, etc.) are built into the applications.

AI powers application generation

Since the event was focused on developers, we spent lots of time showing our latest AI-driven tools for creating applications. In SAP Fiori tools 2403, we introduced the ability to generate applications from a business requirement.... At innovation day, we showed a lab preview of an application generator that uses an image of the app as the starting point. This was the foundation of the hands-on session where participants could sketch an image on paper or the white board and generate an SAP Fiori elements application from that. The AI creates the CAP service, the application, and even sample data so you can test your app. We plan to release this soon. The hands-on allowed participants to try SAP Fiori elements, the flexible programming model, SAP Fiori tools, and the planned AI capabilities in the context of creating a contract management application.

SAP Fiori is incorporating more AI for business users

We ended the day with some previews of planned AI functionality that will first be released into SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Editon.

  • Easy filter – natural language searching in SAP Fiori elements list reports
  • Smart summarization – AI-created summary of SAP Fiori elements object pages
  • Assisted error resolution – providing more context on system errors with recommendations to resolve them
  • Recap – a summary of what you missed when you were away from your SAP system
  • Joule-assisted insight card creation in My Home– ask Joule for the information you need and create a card that you can add to My Home

Some of these are currently in beta testing with selected public cloud customers.

It takes great teamwork to put on SAP Fiori Innovation Day

Putting on an event like this is a major undertaking with many contributors. Thank you to all the SAP presenters (in order of appearance): Katja Zoch, Sebastian Steinhauer, Thomas Reiss, Ioannis Grammatikakis, Carine Tchoutouo Djomo, Thorsten Lange, Ian Quigley; hands-on facilitators: Katrin Polloczek and Christoph Gollmick; partner presenters (also in order of appearance): Michael Englbrecht from eXXcellent solutions, Christophe Chan Hin from sovanta with Sören Schulz from Die Continetale, and Dr. Felix Aller & Christoph Ueberle from cbs Corporate Business Solutions; and panelists: Tina Butz from cbs, Christian Heinrich from sovanta, Michael Englbrecht from eXXcellent solutions, Ioannis Grammatikakis, head of UX Engineering at SAP.

There were also many SAP colleagues who worked behind the scenes to create all the demos and hands-on exercises. And, of course, the AppHaus team, led by Beate Riefer, who handled all the on-site logistics. Finally, a huge thanks to Sebastian Werner, who worked closely with me to bring this event to life.

Most of all, thank you to all the customers that attended, asked insightful questions, and engaged with us all and all the partners during the breaks and after hours.
