This blog highlights the new features introduced in the SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, as part of the 2408.4 release in December 2024.
Add-ons in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition.
Customers implementing or operating SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Public Edition, in a three-system landscape now have the capability to deploy natively developed and seamlessly deliver clean-core ABAP Cloud partner add-ons within the stack. Yes, as you read, the public cloud now offers the ability for partners to create scalable add-ons, enhancing or extending functional or industry aspects within the public cloud. Best of all, these add-ons are developed following SAP’s ABAP Cloud development methodology applied to the public cloud's principle of extensibility, ensuring they are life-cycle compliant and maintain a clean core. This means they are upgrade-safe.
Until December 2024, packaged ABAP Cloud add-ons were only available for SAP S/4HANA On-Premise and SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Private Edition. Now, they are natively available as clean-core solutions for SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud! The integration of SAP Store publishing, order management, and fulfillment with automated deployment to customers' Public Edition systems makes ABAP Cloud add-ons even more advantageous compared to traditional ABAP Cloud add-ons. We believe this new capability will allow partners to offer our customers ample possibilities to enhance functional and industry-specific areas. Traditionally, SAP has relied on partner expertise to introduce new components or address specific complex processes. This innovation enables partners to further complement SAP solutions with their specialized offerings.
These add-ons are specifically designed for the public cloud, utilizing tools that are natively aligned with public cloud development. Consequently, the add-ons are built to be life-cycle compliant, eliminating the need for remediation after upgrades since they are created using SAP’s extensibility tools for the public cloud.
Even with these state-of-the-art extensibility tools, SAP can certify the add-ons to ensure they meet all the requirements of a certified add-on. This includes, among other criteria: the add-on must run on-stack on SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, uninstallation must be supported, the implementation must adhere to the development processes described in the help pages for SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, all objects must be located in a registered namespace, and the add-on must successfully pass a security code scan using the provided code scanning tool of ABAP Development Tools, among other.
For partners interested in developing scalable add-ons, SAP offers the central SAP Business Technology Platform service, Landscape Portal, which orchestrates Add-on Assembly Kit as a Service (AAKaaS), Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD), and many other frameworks. With the Landscape Portal, partners can now build, deliver, and maintain their solutions as add-ons, while customers can seamlessly consume these add-on-based partner solutions. For more details, please refer to the following blog by my colleague, Oren Shatil: Extensibility - General Availability of Scalable Solution for SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition
As detailed in Oren’s blog, SAP is now offering partners a new Test, Demo, and Development (TDD) system that consists of a three-system landscape: Dev, Test & Build, and Showcase. This setup facilitates the development of add-ons in conjunction with an enhanced tool of the " Partner Landscape Portal." More details can be found in Oren's blog.
Add-on process for SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition: from creation in the partner landscape to deployment in the customer landscape.
What does this mean for customers?
SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition customers can benefit from partner add-ons, gaining additional enhancements or extensions tailored to functional or industry-specific solutions provided by specialized partners.
Customers will be able to browse and purchase these add-ons from the SAP Store. With automated deployment, these solutions can be easily made available in the respective customer systems.
Scalable Scenario for Add-Ons: Customer and Partner Process Using SAP Store.
It is recommended to initially deploy such add-on products in the development system of the customer's three-system landscape. This approach allows the product to be tested and integrated into the customer's environment. Once satisfied with the outcome, the product can be installed across all systems in the customer's three-system landscape using the Deploy Product app included in the Customer Landscape Portal.
Customers will be able to purchase and deploy add-ons directly from the SAP Store.
We believe these new capabilities will help our customers gain more specialized functionality derived from the extensive experience of many partners in the SAP ecosystem. Please note that this functionality has just been introduced, so we expect the number of available add-ons to increase over time.
