Do you sometimes struggle to get the right information on SAP software quickly? Do you know the official product assistance tools and channels?

This blog post is about some search tools you may know and others you may not know - yet.
We are concentrating on the following resources:

  • SAP Help Portal
  • In-App Help
  • SAP Community
  • Joule

We’re sure that you know some of them - but maybe one or the other tip or tool presented here is new to you and will help you get right where you want to go to ...

First things first - the one and only SAP Help Portal!

The most important source of official information on our products and applications is of course the SAP Help Portal.

From here, you can start looking for the information you need at a high level by typing in keywords or phrases:

The screenshot shows the search field in the SAP Help Portal. The screenshot shows the search field in the SAP Help Portal.

If you have more precise keywords or know exactly what kind of information you are looking for, you can use the advanced search that is available below the magnifying glass symbol.

If you are only looking for information on a specific product, there are several ways to restrict your search.

One way is to pick your product using the Browse by Product option in the upper task bar, another is to use the Browse all products option. Or you can just click your product directly from this screen if it is listed:

Let's say you are looking for information on the SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, you would select this product then land on this screen:

Now you have an initial overview of the information that is available for your product, such as the Product Assistance - where you should find the most important overview, concept, and how-to documents for the product. But you can also find other information, such as SAP Best Practices, Getting Started with the product, or a gateway to the SAP Community (SAP S/4HANA Cloud Community), to name just a few.

If you now want to dig deeper into the documentation available for the functions and features of your product, you can do so by choosing your language under Product Assistance. This brings you to a veritable mine of information provided by our documentation.

Now you have the choice of navigating to the documents you are looking for - either by clicking your way through the structure that is shown on the sidebar to the left ...

... or by typing in keywords or the actual document titles you are looking for:

Here you get the option of restricting your search to the given product, or, if you want to start a broader search from here, to search across all SAP products.

The search results will be shown in list format together with more information on the area a document is valid for:

If you want to change the language, just select one from the list of available languages:

"In-App Help": Product-specific help in SAP S/4HANA and SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition directly where you need it

As the name suggests, you can also call up documentation from within the app or the system you are just working with. And you get not only the SAP Help Portal documentation but also help texts for fields and labels.

When you are in your SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition system, just click the question mark symbol in the upper right corner:

A sidebar opens showing you the help content available in the given context as well as the field help for the screen you are in. If you hover over the side-bar elements or the question marks, text boxes will open with the relevant information as shown in the following screenshot:

When you are in an individual app, you can click on Whats this app to get to the app description for this particular app on the SAP Help Portal.

You might have noticed other kinds of information sources linked in this sidebar, such as quick tours or SAP Community. If you want to find out more about the details of our in-app help offerings, check out this blog post: Unleashing the power of SAP Companion.

Still not found what you were looking for? Check the Community!

The SAP Community is an excellent platform for knowledge exchange.

It's the place where SAP colleagues and users from around the world share information and experience on a wealth of topics.

To get there, you can either visit the SAP Community website or use the button in your system's in-app help side bar, if available:

The screenshot shows the SAP Community button highlighted on the sidebar. The screenshot shows the SAP Community button highlighted on the sidebar.

Then just type in your questions, keywords, or blog post title (if you happen to remember it) and you'll get instant proposals that you can choose from:

Engaging in the Community is easy.

If the existing blog posts, discussions, and other resources don't contain the information you were looking for, you can also ask the Community. In the SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition and Finance community, for example, you can start directly from the main page:

And last but not least – what about AI? We’ve got Joule to help you!

You may be thinking why should I do all the searching for information myself? Why can't AI assist me? Well, the good news is - it can!

In September 2023, SAP announced the introduction of Joule, a natural-language, generative AI copilot that will be able to assist you with a wide range of tasks and explain how things work. It can help you to navigate to the functions you are looking for, assist you with the completion of your tasks, as well as guide you to information from all sorts of sources.

Over time, it will be included across SAP's product portfolio. It's already available for the SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, for example.

If you want, you can give it a try in your own system by clicking the jewel icon in the upper right corner that is shown in the following screenshot:
