Introduction

SAP is the major ERP in the Airline industry, using our on-field experience, SAP’s Analytics and Insight service team in EMEA, is releasing a new Airline community content as of Q2 2024 in SAP Analytics Cloud. This content will enable SAP’s partner and customer to steer major elements and KPI’s of the industry.

With this post I want to share with you how this content is built, the story we are telling and some key elements on how it should be used.

The key Benefits of this content:

  1. A 360 story in SAC presenting Operational and Financial KPI’s,
  2. Selected operational KPI’s and dashboards,
  3. Simplified models ready to be used by our customers and partners,
  4. Leveraging different visualization in SAC to present the story line:
    • Time series,
    • Thresholds,
    • Geo maps.
  5. Specific focus on key areas of the airline industry: revenues of passenger and cargo, the cost of operational disruptions and the claims, ground and flying staff costs.

Getting started

To get you started with your Airline community content in SAP Analytics Cloud, SAP delivers business content that comes with demo data. This demo data enables you to immediately explore the financial and operational stories and features in SAP Analytics Cloud.

 

Overview – Summary Page

The main story is called: SAP_CC_OVERVIEW and starts with a Summary page which gives a first insight on all the main areas the content is covering:

The last tab is a glossary which explains some industry specifics: haul type, etc…

 

Daily Operation KPI’s

The first tab in the overview story is the Flights – Daily operations, this page is based on the only daily model of this content. This will allow to track on a daily granularity, by routes, all the flights operational KPI’s. The report presents the variation based on Scheduled, Departed, Arrived and Canceled flights from day D-1. There are also different ways presented to show Thresholds on D0 till D15 (Departure on time or after 15mins of schedule) and A0 to A15 (Arrival on time or after 15 mins of schedule)

Bookings

The second tab shows Bookings by Haul type with a comparison done a Year over Year basis. This is based on a monthly model with a breakdown by haul type and by cabin class

This tab allows you to jump on another story SAP_CC_BookingPerRoute which provides more details, for example the booking’s breakdown by cabin class and haul type in a time period graphical report.

Flights - Revenues

The next two-tabs present Revenue KPI’s: Passenger revenue, Cargo revenue and some key airline industry KPI’s: ASK, ATK, Load factor for example. This is based on monthly model with all revenue and cost elements by flight, by route aggregated per month.

On this revenue page, you have a breakdown of all the KPI’s by Haul type and some specific focus on additional revenues. On the next tab, there is a cabin class view of the revenue. The first tab will allow you to jump to a detailed story SAP_CC_AirFlights_Revenue_And_Cost which includes a breakdown of Revenues.

 The first page of the detailed story is a financial scorecard, where all the main KPI’s of the industry are presented for a Full year and a breakdown by haul type.

Each following page will show different visuals and additional insights for Passenger revenue and Cargo revenue. This example below presents some treemap of the load factor by source/destination flights and also of the paid options during a flight:

Flights - Costs

The next tab on the Overview story presents the main cost items of the industry with specific graphs on the Salary evolution and the Revenue.

On the Revenue detailed story, SAP_CC_AirFlights_Revenue_And_Costsome more insights are also available for the costs. You can find additional reports and graphs:

Claims

The next tab on the Overview story presents the Claims costs. This story is based on a specific monthly model to analyze the Claims with specific dimensions: Claim type or Operational disruption type. Claims is a key item to link operational disruption and financial impacts.

From the Claims tab in the Overview, there is an option to jump on a detailed story: SAP_CC_PassengersClaims.

This detailed story adds additional insight for the claims per haul type with a dedicated map of the arrivals with the most disruption. Also, a specific report on the interline costs, flying on another airline company, is available on this story.

Summary

The Airline content is a set of models and reports with high value to the Airline industry customers. It allows the business user to have ready to use visualization and KPI’s. The models have predefined dimensions, but they are also adaptable to the customer specifics: new claim types, additional haul types, flying class differences. The stories allow the user to have a quick overview of the financial health of the company but also additional insightful stories to deep dive on areas needing specific attention from the business. We have embedded in these stories our deep knowledge of the industry.
