Intro

Most asked question in SAP Interviews and Exams. May all know but let us compile it.

Main part.

Take reference from these Q&A1, Q&A2

PIR Consumption: Sales order consume PIR quantity in MD04 screen. No table updated in MD61. See the below difference.

PIR Reduction: GI or GR reduces PIR quantity in MD61. Table will be updated in MD61 and increases the withdrawal quantity automaticaly in background.

Planning StrategyPIR Consumption (When)PIR Reduction (When)Mandatory "Mixed MRP"
10No Consumption of PIR against incoming sales orderWhen goods issue or delivery done for sale order (601 Movement Type-PGI) according to consumption mode & period maintained in material masterNA
11No Consumption of PIR against incoming sales orderWhen GR (101 movement type) is done for production order according to consumption mode & period maintained in material masterYES. Mixed MRP = 2.
20No PIR, So No ConsumptionNOT APPLICABLENA
40When sales order is enteredWhen delivery (PGI) is posted against the sale order (601 movement type) according to consumption mode & consuption period maintained in MMRNA
50When sales order is enteredWhen delivery (PGI) is posted against the sale order (601 movement type) according to consumption mode & consuption period maintained in MMRNA

Factors affecting the Consumption and reduction

Both consumption and reduction are affected by the parameters like consumption mode and period in days maintained in the mrp 3 view of material master and it have the highest priority. If you do not specify a consumption mode, the system uses the consumption parameters from the MRP group that is assigned to the material. If a consumption mode is not specified there, the consumption mode is set to '1' by default (backward consumption only) with a (backward) consumption period of 999 days. This means that the consumption cannot be deactivated

PIR Consumption Example:

Consumption Mode (Back & Forward) and Period 100 days, Strategy 40:

Created a PIR of 10 PC.

PIR quantiy got consumed by new sales order of 1 pc and changed to 9 pc.

But in MD63 you can see that there are no changes as PIR remains 10 pc.

PIR Reduction Example:

Same material with same master data like consumption mode and period. But here I have created a delivery for the sales order and posted goods issue via VL01N. This reduced the PIR in MD63 itself.

MD04 after PGI

Some configurations that affect the consumption and reduction:

OVZG setting for req.class 030: Independent requirement reduction indicator set.

Thank you! Most asked question indeed - not only in interviews & exams. 🙂

Fo reference purposes, I always found SAP notes 772856772857 as well as 47045 absolute must-reads.
