SAP's announcement to discontinue maintenance and support for its established ERP systems puts the affected customers under pressure to transform (Schmeiler & Klassen, 2022, p. 4). At the same time, key technologies such as cloud computing and artificial intelligence are establishing themselves at breakneck speed, forcing companies to revise their business models to avoid becoming the workbench of more innovative companies.

Driven by these triggers, the digital transformation of the entire company is very often at the center of the discussion. Customers are seizing the opportunity to reshape traditional business management through innovative, intelligent and sustainable business processes. The new key technologies and tools enable freedom that can be used to increase the efficiency and productivity of the company. The established customer base can be expanded or completely new customer groups can be developed (Harwardt, 2022, p. 125).

Once the project decision has been made, however, the question of implementation arises. At this point, the initial course is already set for a successful project. A digital transformation requires a change in corporate culture, an adjustment of work processes and a realignment of the business strategy. It is therefore a measure that involves not only technology, but also people and culture. Nevertheless, in some projects, only IT is commissioned for this. Even though the IT application landscape represents a core element of the digital transformation, a dedicated view of IT means that the important perspectives of the specialist departments in particular are usually not sufficiently included. In order to meet these requirements, calls for an Enterprise Architect are becoming louder and louder. This inspired me to start a blog series about the typical discussions I often encounter. The series discusses the tasks of an enterprise architect and the requirements for a successful transformation project. In addition, the question is answered as to whether TOGAF as a tool of an enterprise architect helps to fulfill the requirements.

In the first part, I will shed light on the tasks of an enterprise architect and enterprise architecture management. In the second part, I will examine which criteria must be fulfilled for a successful transformation project. These criteria will be taken up in the third part and analyzed using TOGAF to determine the extent to which they can be supported by enterprise architecture management. Part 4 concludes with a process model that has already been successfully used by several customers.
