SmartEdit - modify retrieved Categories for field

Hi all,

we have a BrandCategory itemtype that extends Category.
One of our custom CMS components has a relation to our BrandCategory.

In SmartEdit, the brands field is populated the usual way categories are retrieved /v1/productcatalogs/{catalogId}/versions/{versionId}/categories

but this way, all Categories are retrieved.

What would be the best way to implement the retrieval of only BrandCategory objects instead of all Category objects?
