Segmentation using S/4 HANA On Premise data

Hello Experts,

We are implementing SAP Marketing Cloud with S/4 HANA as backend. Most of the data that is required for segmentation is in S/4 HANA (On-premise). Is there a way to integrate the Segmentation modeler in SAP Marketing Cloud with S//4? I assume that we can use CDS views to do that, if yes, is there a step by step guide to achieve this?

Thanks for the help!

Hi tanmay2801 ,

Perfect. Then I wonder what kind of data you are looking for in S/4 HANA to segment? Clearly, the scope of integration package in SAP Cloud Platform Integration is not enough for you. Have you thought of extension fields in this case to replicate the required data from S/4 HANA to SAP Marketing Cloud?

Hi , Do we have any campaign marketing solutions for integrating with S/4HANA on premise which allows business partner segmentations?

We cannot use cloud solutions due to customers preference. please advise.

Hi hakan.kose

We are implementing a Utilities project and the data model of SAP Marketing Cloud does not contain all the objects that we need to segment on such as Contract Account, Contract, and the technical Master data. Extending and creating new data sources will mean extensive development effort which will defeat the purpose of implementing a cloud product. We were hoping if we can implement SAP HANA Views and import them into segmentation, then it would not require us to migrate the data into Marketing Cloud.

Thanks,
Tanmay

Hi Tanmay,

It is not possible to segment on data that has not been loaded to SAP Marketing Cloud. The near to real-time segmentation of SAP Marketing Cloud is based on SAP HANA views exposing data saved to its underlying HANA database. You cannot point these segmentation HANA views to an external database as this would have a significant impact on the overall performance.

Thanks,

Theo

Hi tanmay2801 ,

Thanks for the detailed explanation. Now I totally got your point.

I was once in an SAP Marketing on-premise project for an Utilities company. We brought up every industry specific data on the table and we eliminated the unnecessary data for the Marketing department so that we could focus on mandatory information. We had all that information in SAP Marketing via custom fields and custom tables (custom business objects), kind of mixture of both to make the best use of segmentation.

So I agree with Theo.

Thank you! hakan.kose and Theo,

We also reached out to one of SAP Marketing Cloud architects on this and he confirmed that the smart data access (which allows SAP Marketing On-premise to access data from S/4 ISU on Premise) exists only for an on-premise solution and there is no way to use that in SAP Marketing Cloud. They also pointed out that the Smart data access has performance issues even in the Marketing On-premise solution.

I wanted to provide the approach that we are following (or thinking about following) so that we can close this question and if someone has a similar query, they can look at this.

We will be bringing in the high-value attributes to the Marketing cloud by creating custom data sources and expose them into segmentation, the high-value attributes may be Business Master data and Technical Master data. We will also be creating analytics reports that can be accessed through Power BI or SAC. The segmentation user will be provided with all the attributes that they need to do necessary segmentation. They would be able to export the business partner list in a file and create the target groups in Marketing Cloud (also considering calling the SAP Marketing Cloud Target Group API to maybe create target groups directly). Will update this thread when we come up with a definite design.

Thanks for the help. Let me know if you learn anything new.

Thanks,
Tanmay

Hi tanmay2801 ,

Then I assume you already set up this integration between SAP Marketing Cloud and S/4 HANA On-Premise, right?

What's missing information in SAP Marketing Cloud? Maybe you might fill in gaps with custom fields and map them in SCI?

Kind Regards,

Hakan

Hi Hakan,

Yes, we are integrating with S/4 HANA On-Premise for business partner replication.

Thanks,
