Hello Alex,
yes, as you can see in the picture, you can make directly use of the different Marketing Cloud APIs. Most of the Integration scenarios use the SCI though, especially as many ready to use integration packages with integration flows can be downloaded from Integration Hub. Also the customers get a SCI tenant together with their Marketing tenant (see Onboarding Guide - Provided Components). But from a technical point of view you can setup an own integration directly using the APIs without SCI. Find more information in the Integration Guide especially in the "Open Marketing Connectors" and "Integration API" chapters, in the API hub and Integration Content.
