SAP commerce/ Hybris version migration from 6.4 to 1811/1905

Dears,

I know there are some links leading to few info on migration approach/ steps.
But wanted to get good info from any one experienced in the same.
Please help to share some good references / approach to be taken stepwise.

I am sure this will help many projects who started early in Hybris and still not migrated to new features.

We upgraded from 6.4 to 1905 last year. We didn't go for graded upgrade as is generally suggested by experts because after our initial analysis we found that there are not major changes in the functionality used by us and our in place upgrade of local instance worked fine at least for the major functionalities. We did face a few issues but nothing major which made us to regret our approach.

Maybe we were saved because we were using very limited basic features of commerce. The steps on a high level were

1. Took Commerce 1905 setup, added our custom extenions and addons and our old database and fixed build and server startup issues. There were some because some libraries we were using were removed related to QR generation, but that was not an important feature for us at that time so we left that for the time being. Some typecode conflicts were there which and a few more which were fixed in 2-3 days.

2. Took old db in the new setup and ran hybris update.

3. Tested the site and fixed issues as observed.

We created parallel environments for Dev and QA so that development can continue on the older version in parallel for any critical issues or urgent business requirements while upgrade was being done. I hope it will help in getting started.

Okay, more OOTB features we use, more the care need to take.
Could you specify if any challenges in below few modules if you also had, please:

1. Promotion module

2. CsTicket functions

3. Backoffice customizations - widgets n config

4. hotfolder migration

We were not using any of these modules which you mentioned.

Depending on how much customisation has been done in older projects the following issues tend to come up a lot:

- WCMS to Smartedit migration - not so critical as WCMS was temporarily undeprecated but see the headless item

-Promotions - old promotions need to migrate to the Rules based promotion engine

-Adaptive Search - migration required

-Headless - newer storefronts should migrate to Spartacus or another Headless framework (see guidance in CXWorks)
