Multiple customer material numbers for 1 SAP material and vice versa

We have the question in our business if we can have 1 or more customer materials numbers to link to 1 SAP material (ex: Customer uses ABC and XYZ for Material 123). We also want to explore if it is possible to do the opposite (Customer uses ABC for materials 123 and 456). My concerns are:

1. SAP does not have a solution for this – it’s a 1 for 1 system for material codes. Even an enhancement could not change the system functionality.
2. Even if we could assign multiple material numbers for 1 HALB, SAP would not know which code to assign the delivery to. Example, if you input the correct customer material number, the HALB would populate. However, the system assigns batches and deliveries based on the HALB and the CMIR is maintained for labeling. Once the HALB is assigned to a delivery, the system would not be able to kick out the correct customer material number as it would assign the first one in the table.
