How to override a query of an OOB report definition?

Hello experts,

I have a requirement where i need to override the query of an OOB report definition. I understand the fact that we can create a new report definition in the items.xml. But i need help in following areas: 1) Is there any wiki documentation which explains the syntax of creating a new report definition. 2) Is there any way to override the query of an OOB report definition, especially the syntax for doing the same.
