Hi, While organising data and modelling it,how do you decide whether to group the data into a catalog or category if you wnat to group it up. Normally,as a rule of thumb,is it required to create a new catalog or extend existing Hybris catalog?
Request clarification before answering.
Hi Ratchit,
Q: Is it required to create a new catalog or extend existing Hybris catalog?
A: You can create new catalogs or use an existing, default catalog. You can create a hierarchy within catalog structure by pointing to parent catalog. In Backoffice parent catalog is called “supercategory”.
Q: Can you please give an example here?
A: An example would be creating multiple catalogs with different resolutions of electronic tools images: mobile, tablet, desktop_small, desktop_large and pointing their supercategory to a catalog named “Electronics images”.

Categories are descriptive groups of products (eg. men's shoes is an example category). Categories are hierarchical which allow you to model products into descriptive hierarchies.
Catalogs can be considered as a container for a group of products (eg. US product catalog, summer catalog, etc).
