Creating custom smart edit extension

Hey

We have a requirement to override some of the JS files of OOB smart edit extension.. so we are going to create a custom smart edit extension.. But there is no template available for smart edit. so we have created extgen.properties file in the smart edit extension then generated a new extension.. But am facing some issues while starting the server.. Do i have to remove the OOB smart edit extension ? we dont have smartedit extension expicitely in our localextensions file.. Am i missing something? Please suggest a proper way to create a custom smart edit extension
