Budget planning without using campaigns as spending containers

Dear experts,

I have the following question: a customer wants to use the budget planning capabilities of SAP Marketing Cloud, but his marketing budget planning is being done in a very "elaborate" way, most of the positions in his current budget plans can't be converted into a logical SMC-campaign. That means the customer would have to create hundreds of empty campaigns in SMC each year (a campaign for every bill, more or less) to fill his budget plan with the respective spendings.

Has anyone faced this problem before? Is there some sort of workaround you could present the customer?

I am working with Marc. I am the PO for planning in SMC.

There is no possibility to upload actual directly in budget plans.

As of now, our planning component doesn't seem to be suited to accommodate what you are describing. At least, I am not clear how they want to fund the campaigns. It seems that their planning is disconnected from the running campaigns.

One option is to use Planning from SAP Analytics Cloud, which is available with an SAP Analytics Enterprise license. SAC Planning is an advanced planning tool which offers great flexibility and feature set. If the customer has BW, he can use the CDS extraction possibility to brings some data from SMC to BW. BW is one of the data source that SAC Enterprise can use. The extracted data can be used in SAC planning.

Hello Nils,

Could you provide more information about how the customer use SMC? Which functions in SMC the customer use? Do they use only be budget planning? Do they use campaign execution?

When you said their marketing budget planning is done in a very "elaborate" way, could you describe the different dimensions they use to define their budget?

Also, could you elaborate on how they want to fund their campaigns?

Hi Marc,

the customer uses SMC mostly for about a hundred trigger based campaigns that channel specific website interactions as leads into C4C. Additionally the customer uses the automated campaign capabilities of SMC to send newsletters and other mail content to specific audiences. Right now they do their marketing budget planning via complex excel sheets in top-dimensions like printings, events and fairs, promotional items, campaigns (like google ads or advertisement in magazines), that all get drilled down into increasingly detailled subjects until the nuclear component (for example the very specific magazine ad with a cost of 1000€) is reached.
