Are characteristics mandatory for integrating hybris and S/4 Hana

Hi Gurus,

Is it mandatory to maintain charecterstics in sap s/4 hana material master to enable integration of material master with hybris.

If charecterstics and classification are not maintained then what are other options to integrate hybris with S/4 Hana
