Approach for split payment

Hi, We have an issue where we need to be able to split the payment type on the checkout page. For example, the total order value is $20.

The customer pays $15 on a gift card, and pays the remaining $5 with a visa credit card.

Has anyone built some similar functionality?

Our approach was to reduce the order total by $15 and then ask the customer to pay with another method. But this is causing a lot of issues as the order total refuses to update. We considered using the coupon or promotion mechanism, but these are usually applied at the cart page and not the final payment page.
