Adapt display of references in SmartEdit Dropdowns

We have custom CMS components that link to categories.

The field is populated ok by default in SmartEdit and can be edited. Our problem is that we have quite a lot of categories and the user needs not only the category name but also its code to select the right category.

I have the intention, that the behaviour is defined in this smartedit module (ext-smartedit/cmssmartedit/web/features/cmssmarteditContainer/components/genericEditor/singleActiveCatalogAwareSelector/singleActiveCatalogAwareItemSelector/singleActiveCatalogAwareItemSelector.js) but I am not sure on how to override the behaviour as there are only examples for components or services. https://help.sap.com/viewer/86dd1373053a4c2da8f9885cc9fbe55d/1808/en-US/af037831649b4b88b6f0fddcee81...
