Why should we switch to the HANA DB?

This is a typical question I get asked in many customer meeetings nowadays.

I would like to let you look at the search for accounts and contacts in SAP CRM, to give you some perspective.

The performance of this search is key for every customer. But would switching to HANA DB help to accelerate the performance?

First of all: You can expect that reading of data is per se faster with HANA. Especially if you search on mass data you usually can notice clear differences in the performance.

To provide you with some background: When preparing the search for accounts and contacts in SAP CRM for HANA, we investigated its performance for the key search cases used by many customers. If such a case was unexpected slow or not fast enough we provided necessary corrections. The goal was to offer a low cost entry for HANA, with minimal adaptions in applications. We continued with this approach after the first delivery of SAP CRM on HANA, providing some more corrections based on additional customer feedback.

This has led to one SAP Note 1887709 that contains all SAP Notes that you can implement to benefit from this effort. Note: The SAP Notes that don't have "HANA" in their title are valid also when not using HANA DB.

For you, as a customer, this means: Be aware of the general benefits you can get with using HANA as a DB for SAP CRM. Be also aware that with the first approach (described above) applications are not changed completely but adapted only in a quite conservative manner. This should help you to estimate the effort that switching to the HANA DB could mean for you.
