Whether SAP end user experience in BPO is considered to become SAP MM support/consultant?

Hi,

I have 6.7 years of experience out of which 5 years of experience in SAP end user where i was working on vendor Invoice verification, posting of invoice in SAP, payments to the vendor. After 5 years I got an chance to work on project for SAP MM testing. Since last 1.7 years I am working on SAP mm module as a tester. but my technical knowledge of SAP MM is not that much good as I had not worked functionally on the concepts like master data, material, vendor creation etc.

Now, I wanted to switch my career as a SAP MM support/Consultant but my profile is SAP front end user. I do not have hands on experience. Please guide me which book/blog should I refer?

Hi Rupali,

As your domain is basically Invoice verification and then you are working as SAP MM tester, so there a lot you have to learn to become SAP Consultant, I think there are multiple blog here in SAP Community which will be very useful for you, here in SAP Community once the blogger write a blog then it goes for moderation by subject matter experts then it publish for all users of SAP Community so any blog which have tag of Materials management will be beneficial for you, I suggest go for Mr Juergan L's blog, every MM consultant must have somewhere got to learn from him.

As you have already worked as an end-user and a tester, and are not new to SAP, you can learn the skills quickly to qualify for Support/Consulting role. Here’s what you could do:

  1. Aim for the career in latest SAP Products.
  2. Learn how the new SAP Offerings support the corresponding business processes.
  3. Target a SAP Customer, who has adopted the new solution, for a Support Role.
  4. Take formal SAP Trainings and Certifications.
  5. Pitch for a Consulting Role with some SAP System Integrator.

The above guidelines are applicable to all SAP Aspirants. You can relate your scenario as follows:

  1. Even though there are still many organizations who are using SAP MM, the market is shifting to SRM and Ariba. If you want to stay relevant in job market, aim for the current market trends. Read Stay relevant in times of rapid digitization for details.
  2. There are plenty for resources to learn about SAP products; you can start with the process & product overview at SAP website. You can also take openSAP courses, for free, to learn more, such as Procurement Transformation with SAP Ariba and SAP S/4 HANA.
  3. You have worked on a Support role and you understand it’s challenges, from managing day-to-day incidents & problems, to addressing Change Requests and New Requirements. You can use your previous experience and new knowledge to get a SAP SRM/Ariba support role, for instance.
  4. Adding training to experience fill the gap of how a SAP Product “should be” and “is” used. You’ll notice considerable differences between how certain customers use solutions and how a SAP Product/application can support the business in running better.   5. Bring the right mix of your earlier experience and qualifications to Consulting market where such skills are valued.
