Hi Krishna,
Having the knowledge about the accounting concepts is the foundation for an FI/CO consultant, you must have a good experience in accounting to be able to understand the client's requirements.
u are a software engineer then have u considered technical modules like basis or Abap?
Having said that if u have made up your mind to get into FI/CO then please acquaint yourself with accounting basic concepts and after that a good understanding about the business processes of the client. a lot of accounting books are available in the market which will build up a foundation for FI. please go through the same
lastly, you can get accounting concepts by reading books available in the market, but for processes you have to work/gain experience in accounts department to have understand how it functions in SAP.
Passing a certification is one thing and consulting is another ball game, just make sure that you have sound FI knowledge.
hope this helps, any clarifications or guidance on this, feel free to ask!

Hi J,
Thanks for your reply. There no chance for me to work as an accountant now, I am an Oracle Developer, with a masters degree in computers, but I have to change my career into FICO. I considered BW in SAP which is very close to my work, but I didn't find anything special in BW same boring technical stuff..............
I can read books and get good Accounting Knowledge, but I can't get work experience as an accountant.
referring to your words "good understanding about the business processes of the client" can i get this understanding by working as an Oracle developer??
My action plan:
1. Firstly I gain basic knowledge on Accounting.
2. Secondly I take training in a good institute.(Reliance Global Services, Hyderabad,India)
3. I continue working as an Oracle developer for an year to gain good understanding about the business processes of the client.
4. Parllely i brush up my SAP FI/CO knowledge.
5. When ever I think I am good to go, I just start applying for jobs in FI/CO.
What is your opinion about my action plan? Is it ok? Please advice me if i need to change any thing or if i have to add some things in the above plan.
Once again thanks for your precious advice.

HI
This is my small suggestion
As you have strong programming knowledge you first do BASIC or ABAB and enter in SAP ERP as consultant while doing your job as BASIC or ABAB consultant you will be interacting with fico consultant for reports and other configuration where you will know much about the flow of fico which will be easy to understand than reading Finance books Always practical experience makes you masters
Always donu2019t do changes in your career line if you do change then the change should be adding value to your previous experience? Other wise what you have struggle and learned will be wasted ie again you be treated as fresher in the job market
Thanks

hi krishna,
by good understanding of processes, i meant processes related finance, your action plan seems to be alright, but to change from to FICO u need a good understanding of processes, coz its a pre-requisite for consulting, just make sure that u know the basic concepts of accounts and its processes, before enrolling yourself to the institute as people who enrol for certification are assumed to have sound knowledge of accounts.....
hope this info helps, let me know if you need futhur guidance, clarifications....
