Technical or Functional

Hi Everyone,

I searched lot of threads but still didn't conclude on my future decision.

Below are my details

Education Background.

Attain master degree(ME) from mechanical .

SAP background.

I had almost 10 years of SAP ABAP exp and  Certified in ABAP sap netweaver 7.0.

I will rate myself in ABAP out of 10 is 6.

But I am decent abaper.

Sometimes i will hate coding . because Always debugging and also if any small issue occured in the project then

functional consultants will directly told to debug the issue without doing any analsys from their end.

Now i want to enhance my carrier by learning new things.

I am in dilemma whether can i go on the functional side or to stay in the technical side.

Can anyone please let me know which one is having bright future for me to learn.

I mean if it is better to stay in technical side,  then which courses need to learn.

If it is better to switch to functional , then which courses are better. for me based on my eduction and skill set

Hope your Doing well.

First of all be Confident whatever you want to do.

As i am also SAP ABAP Consultant i can understand what the point you want to make . 

As I didn't have that much of  experience that i can tell you what to do but i think you better know and ask yourself what to do.

but i can only suggest you that if have 10 years of experience then you know Good Functional things but this is not enough as SAP world is like sea .you continue to evolve your skills accordingly.

As an ABAP Consultant didn't have binding to learn the functional module but it is always good practice to know about every business process.if learn Functional Topics then you will able to answer to functional people in more effective manner.

About Debugging Headache :if have the knowledge and good understanding of business processes well then you will come to know what to Debug Sometimes we Could not able decide . but we have Apply the Eliminating technique before we have to look for the possible Cause that where business process and business mind will help you . Always Discuss in you Group .It is up to you how you convince to people but before convincing to people you have to have Good knowledge to that Process .and Knowledge always Begin by taking effort .

ABAP  Future : ABAP Future is bright as SAP HANA have tremendous scope for SAP ABAP Consultant .Becoz in SAP  HANA supports techniques for many platforms.

As you told you have almost 10 Years of SAP ABAP Experience then now you well knowledge of Queries both OPEN SQL and Native these things will help you in SAP HANA as all customers are moving towards HANA .

Only i want suggest or my opinion Stay in ABAP and Learn the other modules business process and upgrade your knowledge day by Day.

One thing here I am thinking about learning HANA or Fiori.

From your thing HANA is better, What about Fiori future.

which one is better and which suits better for me to learn and get bright opportunities.

And also looking some onsite opportunity .

Raj,

Because of 10 years of experience in ABAP, you can demand a "premium" (more salary than those having lesser experience). This will not hold if you venture in to a new area for example functional role. I would suggest stay in ABAP and venture in to technical areas.

Repetition (one of the points about always debugging) is an integral part of any profession. As an SD analyst, we go into VBAK, VBRK many many many times. Yes it could be viewed as boring but we need to see something new even when we do the same thing. It is up to you, to find newness in the things you are doing for years.

Functional analyst asking to debug with out doing much analysis him/herself: Yes this happens sometimes. But the fact that you would have to work in a team will not change. If you are lucky you will get great team members or else you have to take things in to your hands...get the motivation, give some "suggestions" to the functional folks (which might not help).

Stay in the area where you know the things and build, build....

Dear Raj ,

Good Morning !

Please don't be confuse with SAP HANA and SAP Fiori .Because Fiori is Application for user interface Design  and HANA is Platform where Fiori-like apps are Run.

Both have Different possibilities and Different Career Paths Event though they will co-ordinate each other .if you select Fiori the Focus will more on Design Development and  if select the HANA then more Focus on Application Development and Performance Tuning / or improvement ,Simplification of the process.

Whichever you Decide is your choice to decide but HANA having  advantage because it is base application.

Please take Decision and follow whatever you Decide.
