Hi Chandrajith,

As suggested by Selva, you have to take a basic SAP ABAP training to get into SAP.  SAP ABAP Webdynpro exactly suits you because "The concept of Web Dynpro ABAP is identical with Web Dynpro Java and offers more or less the same functions" - SAP, so you can utilize the Java skill very well.

Also, suggested by others, you can do a google search on SAP ABAP Webdynpro.

There is separate SAP SCN community forum for SAP ABAP Webdynpro and also check following SAP links as a starting point https://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/en/77/3545415ea6f523e10000000a155106/frameset.htm &

Hi selva ,

Thanks for your reply.

I have read like SAP ABAP is just like a data entry Job and useful only for extracting reports.

Can you just correct if my understanding is wrong.

Hi chandrajith yadav

ABAP is the basic language which runs SAP it is not only creating reports it consist of so many things like FORMS, enhancement, DDIC , exit ,badi , bapi etc.

nobody will use standard SAP itself in their business they need some customisation in SAP that can be done by ABAP .

Since  you don't have Domain knowledge in MM, SD, PP etc. it will be difficult for u I think.

so   it will be  easier if u chose ABAP.

Hi Chadrajith,

Is he in mainframe programming support or system support?

If it is programming support then he can learn SAP ABAP.

If it is system support then he can learn SAP Netweaver Basis

As you are beginner in SAP and have a previous knowledge in programming with JAVA you should start your career in ABAP, I Know so many people who are working as ABAP programmers now was  JAVA developers.

Start with ( TAW10 Part 1 ) it's an official SAP ABAP material and in first unit it will gives you and overview about SAP

As JAVA developers are most expert for coding. So SAP ABAP is based on coding module. If you are interested about coding part, then you can choose ABAP module. And who told you "SAP ABAP is just like a data entry Job and useful only for extracting reports"

It is not correct, work for ABAP consultant is to make a Z program or report or t-code based on functional specification.

Thnks Dev ,

In any of the SAP functional modules is there any scope for ABAP developers?

See, ABAP is technical module and others are functional module.

Functional modules are depend on various business process. Every functional module has its own business process.

Like as MM module is related to procure to pay process.

SD module is related to Sales and distribution process.

FI module is related to Financial matter.

I can't refer any functional module to a technical person. As technical person can write coding as per FS for every module. Then do not have much experience for every functional module but they can write a Z program with the help of FS for every module.

So as a technical consultant it is totally depend on your about functional module chosen.

Chandrajith,

Ta a very high level , we can divide the SAP Consultants as

Functional = MM, FI ,SD,PP,QM PP etc . They map the business into the system .( they wont do coding). They are business experts.

Technical= ABAP. They do the coding part

Basis = GRC ,Security etc

Each of it can be further sub defined  to many other categories.

Technical , the sub division follows as  ABAP, Webdyne pro, ALE/idoc , PI etc.

Think from a manufacturing plant business of view .

The  above are just for your understating. As you are completely new to SAP space. Just like if you explain how a java code works !!

If an  a person who know SAP , the explanation will be completely different.

hope you get some good idea. Google it and read more

Yes. They can make a Z program for any module. They just need a proper FS (Functional Specification) which consist correct table and field name for data fetching.

Chadrajith,

There are lots of Modules in SAP to choose, To know more about the SAP and which module to choose , try to attend introduction sessions for all modules of different training Centers and get an idea then you can decide to which are you can shift to.

You can find lots of videos over internet about SAP and introduction to SAP.

Hi Chandrajit,

My intention is not stop you for choosing SAP is an carrer. rather i want to really know why exactly u want to shift. but anyway now it's little bit clear.

If you really wanto to choose SAP, then someone in the earlier blog rightly said, there are many modules in SAP. but as an JAVA back ground (programming) for you ABAP is best option. ABAP is an programming language for all other modules to work. As you wrongly said, ABAP is not like data entry (ther are many things we can do, offcourse it is very difficult to exaplain you here).

Prasad

Hi chandrajith yadav,

Availability of SAP consultants are also plenty.

what matters is the expertise and key skill set with good exposure in some awesome projects( that's critical /tough to get such good projects).

If you are looking for something new to learn , yes i recommend to think and switch to SAP.
