Should I do SAP(SD) or SAP(ABAP) with this background?

Hi

I am having 4 years experience as Medical Representative. My qualification is BSc(PCM) & a distance MBA Marketing degree .I m 37 yrs old. My experience in pharma sales didn't involve most of the processes studied or discussed in SAP SD. As far as I know SAP SD covers mainly Industrial Marketing starting from processing of Raw materials till going to the Stockist/Distributor. Unfortunately as a salesman aka Medical Rep I never had the chance to go through all these various sales processes & also to know when & in what format sales invoices are created ,what they are called in each stage ,how the shipping takes place etc etc . I think all these is mentioned as a Business Process in SAP??

Now since I also have a B.Sc. in Pure Science i.e. PCM(Phy,Chem ,Maths) I am thinking of joining ABAP instead of SD as there more number of jobs in ABAP than in SD.This is the main & in fact the only reason that I am thinking of ABAP ,as I feel that a fresher like me with no strong Industrial Sales/Marketing background can get job only through ABAP. I'm not doing it from an ATC(Auth. Training Center) but from a privately run company.

But I am also not sure if I can succeed with ABAP ,also will my age be a factor not only for concentration in studies but also due to competition in market? And also I need to learn OOPS & Excel & JAVA programming for all these?

Ultimately I need a job. So with this background should I choose SAP SD or SAP ABAP?

Please advice.

Thanks & Regards

Hi Choudhary,

If you have a job assurance , then you can go for ABAP. Otherwise I recommend SAP SD.

For programming most companies pick youngsters . One of my friend couldn't grab a job due to the age factor. There could be many reasons.

My point is if you are planning to switch to SAP ,I recommend you choose SAP SD. There are also industry specific SAP.Please check on that too.

I wish you good luck.

Hi Pradip !

Wow, interesting that your resume . So, I think you should study what is more familiar, both modules are very good, if choose, start with the SD and then go to ABAP and work with them.

Best regards,

Ohh Thank You Sir!!

But are there SD jobs in India? I think ABAP has more scope.

Thanks Nigil , I agree with you. Another factor which I see in India ,that most ABAPers are from Engineering or Comp.Sc/MCA background. I never found a single profile who is a plain arts/comm/science graduate who has gone straight for ABAP at the very start of their SAP education.

Hi Pradip,

Really very tough to answer your question. I agree with Nigel.

As you said you are 37 years old , if you want to go for ABAP , you need to compete graduates passed out from collage. Most companies prefer to hire them offering less salaries. It does not matter for them, as they are landing in jobs once they finished their studies. here I see there are very less chances for you to get job opportunities in ABAP.

Coming to SD module , once we get 3- 4 years of marketing / sales experience , people often switch their career to SAP SD. here you compete with 28 - 33 years of people depends upon how much domain experience. I think to go with SAP SD is the better option than ABAP.

Very brave decision to change the career at 37 years. please analyze the opportunities before change your career.

AS TW said ,its very hard to get SAP job opportunity  as most of the companies do not  prefer freshers.

Dream  BIG....Work Hard.

All the best .

Thanks,

SS

Pradip,

Don't go for either! I see doubt and hesitation in your mind, therefore don't change. Breaking in to SAP job market is not easy and could take many months/maybe years.

You don't have business process knowledge, so don't go for SD.

Members,

How are you suggesting the OP to go for SAP SD?

He has understood very correctly the important of sales business scenarios in order to become an SD analyst, and does not have this experience.
